Rick Campbell (1952-) is an American poet and former director of the poetry publishing firm Anhinga Press. The collection comprises nine items written by Philip Levine to Rick Campbell: three computer-generated typed letters signed and two autograph letters signed, dated 2001 May 24 to 2011 April 11; three autograph postcards signed, dated or postmarked 2000 to 2005; and an undated autograph letter signed, written on two unstamped postcards; also, a four-page document capturing email exchanges between Levine and Campbell, 2014 May 27 to 2015 February 7, regarding the publication of a poem by Levine in the journal Kestrel. A re-typed printout of the letter dated 2011 April 11, returned from an unidentified recipient with a note thanking Campbell for it, is included. The collection charts the epistolary friendship of the two poets, originating in Anhinga Press's publication of work by winners of the Philip Levine Prize for Poetry, sponsored by California State University at Fresno. Levine's letters and postcards discuss the Prize and thank Campbell for sending him Anhinga Press imprints and volumes of Campbell's own poetry. Anthony Horton was an African-American man who for a period of his life was homeless and lived in the tunnels beneath the subway trains. Together with author/artist Youme Landowne, Horton wrote and illustrated "Pitch Black: Don't be Skerd" (2008) which tells the story of how the two met, his background and his life underground. Horton worked with the Theater of Oppressed NYC, frequently playing the role of a police officer in the troupe's performances. He died in a fire that ripped through his underground home. The Anthony Horton Collection consists of a mock-up for the book he and Youme Landowne wrote and illustrated together, "Pitch Black: Don't be Skerd," about Horton's life in the tunnels under the New York City subway system, and letters he wrote to his co-author/friend from 2009-2010. The letters discuss their friendship and his thoughts; most were written while he was an inmate in Downstate Correctional facility in Fishkill, New York. According to Landowne, he was incarcerated because of possession of an antique knife that he wanted to sell. There are additional writings along with original artwork and illustrations. less

Gabriel Banat is an American violinist who played for many years with the New York Philarmonic. He was born in Transylvania, Romania in 1926, eventually moving to Hungary. At the age of eight, he was discovered by Béla Bartók, who enabled him to be accepted at the Royal Academy in Budapest (now the Franz Liszt Academy of Music), where he won honors. In 1946 he moved to New York City where he toured with Georges Enesco, his mentor. He became a naturalized citizen in 1953. He toured in the United States, Europe and Japan, and was guest soloist with the London Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, among others. In 1970 he joined the New York Philharmonic. He was a professor at Smith College where he led the violin department. He also conducted various ensembles and organizations during his career. His research on Mozart led to publication in facsimile of Mozart's five violin concertos (Raven Press, 1986). His research on the Chevalier de Saint-Georges led to a biography (Pendragon Press, 2006) as well as numerous articles. He also edited the series "Masters of the Violin" (1981-1982). Materials are organized in three series (Administrative Files, Lavanburg Villages Project, and Grants), and range in date from 1927 to 2011. The Fred L. Lavanburg Foundation was established in 1927 as a low-income, non-profit housing corporation for families with children who were unable to find housing elsewhere. The Lavanburg Homes were constructed in Manhattan in 1927, and in 1956, were donated to New York City. In the 1960s, the Lavanburg Foundation took on a second construction project, building the Lavanburg Villages in the Bronx. From 1927 to 2006, the Lavanburg Foundation also provided seed-money grants to organizations assisting in the foundation's mission of providing better housing and social support for low-income families.
