The National Conference of Artists (NCA), founded in 1959, is the country's oldest and largest visual arts organization, and provides a national and international forum for emerging and established artists of African descent. The National Conference of Artists Records consists of administrative records, by-laws, and printed material, especially relating to annual national conventions.

Biographical/historical information

The National Conference of Artists (NCA), founded in 1959, is the country's oldest and largest visual arts organization, and provides a national and international forum for emerging and established artists of African descent. Membership is not restricted to individuals of African ancestry. NCA provides scholarships for emerging artists seeking degrees in the visual arts, and supports the work of other arts and cultural organization by featuring their events. NCA's membership includes artists, educators, scholars, exhibitors, distributors, collectors, and other supporters of African-American art. Numerous chapters are located throughout the country. A journal, The Artary: A Black Art News Magazine was published quarterly.

Scope and arrangement

The National Conference of Artists Records consists of administrative records, by-laws, and printed material, especially relating to annual national conventions. Of interest are two files containing printed material about African-American artists. Other material consists of an "Afro-American source directory of visual arts" (1976), the introduction by the director of a youth conference (ca. 1978), a membership directory (ca. 1984), and a newsletter and a few items about the New York City chapter. The collection concludes with the NCA's two publications, The Artary (1984-1985) and newsletters and brochures (1980-2001, scattered).
