Robert Stone was an award-winning American novelist and screen writer. His works include A Hall of Mirrors, Dog Soldiers, A Flag for Sunrise, Children of Light, and Outerbridge Reach. The Robert Stone papers date from 1950 to 2013, and consist of notes, typescript drafts (on paper and computer disk), galleys, and proof pages for all of Stone's novels; shorter pieces and excerpts from the novels in draft, galley, and published form; reviews and publicity material; and general correspondence. Typescript drafts of Stone's novels comprise the bulk of the papers and reflect his method of composition. Later drafts, galleys, and proofs document the books' progress up to the point of publication. Most of the correspondence are letters received by Stone and document his career as a novelist. less

Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera. less

The Carnegie Corporation was founded in 1911 by Andrew Carnegie to continue his philanthropic work after his death. In 1901 Carnegie offered the City of New York 5.2 million dollars to establish a branch library system. The collection consists of correspondence that chronicles the creation of these circulating libraries. The bulk of the letters dated 1901-1912 were sent to Andrew Carnegie by John Shaw Billings, Director of the New York Public Library. The correspondence discusses the Carnegie gift, cost estimates and specific sites for branches, library needs, and plans to finance ongoing library operations. Other correspondence pertains to branch libraries in Brooklyn and Queens including letters relating to the proposed merger of the Brooklyn Library and the Brooklyn Public Library. less

John Dod Ward (1795-1873) was an American marine engineer who lived and worked in New Jersey, Vermont, New York, and Montreal. His son, Charles Dod Ward (1838-1915), was a civil engineer who married Ada Davey, daughter of Henry Lewis Davis and Jane Moore Sprong of Oswego, New York. The John Dod Ward family papers date from 1800 to 1936 and document the activities and lineage of the Ward, Roburds, Davis, and Sprong families through correspondence, business papers, diaries, photographs, and genealogical research files. He has taught printing at the University of Alabama and Cornish College (Seattle) and is the author of the manual Printing on the Iron Handpress (1997), Nineteenth-Century Printing Practices and the Iron Handpress (2004), as well as numerous essays and lectures on the book arts. Lavanburg Foundation was established in 1927 as a low-income, non-profit housing corporation for families with children who were unable to find housing elsewhere. The Lavanburg Homes were constructed in Manhattan in 1927, and in 1956, were donated to New York City. In the 1960s, the Lavanburg Foundation took on a second construction project, building the Lavanburg Villages in the Bronx. From 1927 to 2006, the Lavanburg Foundation also provided seed-money grants to organizations assisting in the foundation's mission of providing better housing and social support for low-income families.
