Gerome Ragni (1935-1991) was a stage actor and musical theater lyricist and librettist active from the 1950s through the 1980s, who achieved renown as one of the authors and original stars of the musical, Hair (1968). Born Jerome Bernard Ragni in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he attended suburban Scott Township High School, where he appeared in various school productions. In 1954, Ragni made his professional stage debut in a Washington D.C. production, Shadow and Substance. His acting career was put on hold when Ragni enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1955. Following his years in the Air Force, Ragni moved to New York and found work in the rapidly growing Off-Broadway theater community. In 1964, he met fellow actor James Rado, who would become a major figure in Ragni's personal and professional life. In 1965, Ragni and Rado began writing a rock musical that would depict contemporary life in New York's East Village, the hippie movement, the anti-Vietnam war protests, and the generation gap, symbolized in a central metaphor of long hair. In early 1967 they teamed up with Canadian composer, Galt MacDermot, who provided the music for their book and lyrics. Ragni and Rado's original intent with Hair was to introduce the uptown Broadway world to that other world downtown and they tried to interest mainstream musical theater producers, such as David Merrick and Hal Prince, but Joseph Papp, head of the Off-Broadway Public Theater, with whom Ragni had worked previously, was the only one interested in the project. Hair opened at the Public Theater on October 29, 1967, with Ragni in one of the lead roles, Berger. The Off-Broadway production was a critical and financial success and produced a cast album. Michael Butler, the heir to a Chicago fortune, decided to finance and produce the transfer of the show to Cheetah, a disco nightclub in the theater district in December of 1967 and eventually to Broadway. Ragni, Rado and McDermot made significant revisions to the show, writing several new songs and a largely new book. This new version of Hair opened on Broadway on April 19, 1968 to enthusiastic reviews and became phenomenally popular with audiences, running for 1,750 performances. A national tour and sit-down productions of the show played in other major US cities, as well as productions in dozens of other countries and in many different languages In 1979, Hair was made into a film directed by Milos Forman. Its hit songs, such as "Aquarius" and "Let the Sun Shine In" have been covered by many singers. After their success with Hair, Ragni and Rado played themselves in Lions Love (1969), a film by Agnes Varda about Hollywood celebrity. Ragni's next Broadway musical, another collaboration with Galt MacDermot, Dude (1973), was not successful critically or commercially. In the 1980s, the Hair trio of Ragni, Rado, and MacDermot reunited for another musical, YMCA (also titled Sun) which was not produced. The Gerome Ragni papers consist mainly of professional files pertaining to theater and film projects written by Gerome Ragni, or in which he appeared as an actor. There are items from productions Ragni acted in during school and later in New York, such as Hamlet (1964), Hang Down Your Head and Die (1964), The Knack (1964) and Viet Rock (1966) but the majority of the material in this collection pertains to the original Broadway production of Hair (1968). There is also some material on subsequent projects with which Ragni was involved, including the show, Dude (1973), and the film, Lions Love (1969). This collection also contains personal items, including correspondence with Ragni's family and friends and documents on his Air Force service. The strength of this collection is its extensive coverage of the many productions Hair in the United States and internationally, represented here with photographs, programs, posters and press materials. Richard John Hughes, Jr. (1924-1996) was a stage manager, director, set designer, and actor in regional theatre, touring companies, and off-Broadway productions. The Richard Hughes collection dates from 1942 to 1993 and documents his training at the University of Texas, his participation in regional theatre and off-Broadway productions, and his work as production stage manager for the national tours of Man of La Mancha, Lovely Ladies-Kind Gentlemen, Irene, and Pippin. less

Philburn (Phil) Friedman (1921-1988) was an American stage manager. Friedman managed numerous Broadway and West Coast theater productions, many of them musicals, including Kismet (1953), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Pippin (1972), Chicago (1975), and Dancin' (1978). He worked with director, writer, and choreographer Bob Fosse for nearly 15 years, and played the part of the stage manager in Fosse's 1979 autobiographical film, All That Jazz. He also worked extensively with directors Cy Feuer and Abe Burrows. The Phil Friedman papers (1805-1979) document Friedman's general interest in theater and to some extent, his work as a stage manager. The collection holds programs, telegrams, photographs, biographical material, and scrapbooks containing images of stage actors from the early 1900s. less

Merle Debuskey (b. 1923) is an American theater press representative. From 1948 until his retirement in 1996, he publicized over 500 theatrical productions. He was the first and longest-lasting press agent for Joseph Papp and the Public Theater, from its inception in the 1950s until 1985. The Merle Debuskey papers date from 1952 to 1996 and document Debuskey’s work as a press representative for Broadway and Off-Broadway theater productions, and his work with The Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers (ATPAM). The collection holds publicity files for theater productions and actors; correspondence and press-related material relating to Joseph Papp and the Public Theater; administrative files relating to the Tony Awards and ATPAM; and scripts. less

Athol Fugard is a South African playwright. The Nancy T. Kearns collection of Athol Fugard materials dates from 1983 to 1996. Some of the items in the collection are copies of material that was originally created in the 1970s. The collection contains programs, production photographs, clippings about Fugard and his plays, and lectures that Kearns wrote on Fugard's The Road to Mecca. Many of the programs and clippings are for productions at 7 Stages theater in Atlanta, Georgia. Howard Kyle (1861-1950) was an American stage and radio actor who was active from the 1880s to the 1930s. He served as secretary of the Actors' Equity Association from 1913 until 1919, when he resigned from the organization and joined the Actors' Fidelity League. As a member of the Players, he worked to have an Edwin Booth memorial sculpture erected in Gramercy Park. The Howard Kyle papers date from the 1870s to 1954 and contain correspondence, photographs, theater programs, event programs, clippings, and other documents concerning his professional and personal life. The collection contains materials related to his work with Actors' Equity, the Actors' Fidelity League, the Players, and other theater organizations. The collection also contains materials concerning productions he was involved with, including the Howard Kyle Players production of Nathan the Wise (1912) and performances by the Century Theatre Club. The majority of the photographs are of Kyle or his wife, actor Amy Urcilla Hodges. There are also unidentified photographs and photographs of fellow performers, including singer Rosa Ponselle. Some of the photographs are inscribed to Amy Hodges. The collection also contains an unidentified one-act script and a eulogy for actor Henry Miller. Lucie Lancaster (1907-1998) was an American actor who appeared in theater, television, and film. Her papers include photographs, programs, clippings, scripts, sheet music, notes, and other papers documenting her career from the 1930s to 1983. Most of the papers pertain to theatrical productions, including The Music Man (1958 national tour), The Girl Who Came to Supper (1963), and Pippin (1972). The collection also contains two costume design sketches, including one drawing for Bajour (1964) by designer Freddy Wittop. The collection includes sides and excerpts of scripts for Lancaster's various theatrical roles, as well as full scripts for The Girl Who Came to Supper and "The Old Lady Shows Her Medals," an episode of The United States Steel Hour. Scripts and sides have some handwritten changes, and sometimes contain production papers such as rehearsal or filming schedules. The collection also includes sheet music from The Girl Who Came to Supper, Bajour, and How Now Dow Jones (1967). There are headshots and publicity photographs of Lancaster from throughout her career. The earliest item in the collection is a notebook, dating to about the 1920s, labeled "Lucy Ruby, Grand Theatre Luton." The notebook contains handwritten transcripts of dialogue from plays. less

The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus is an American circus company formed in 1919. The company runs two train-based tours throughout North America, the Red and Blue Tours, each of which perform a separate edition of the circus show for two years. This collection consists of sketches, fabric swatches, sample notions and jewels, photographs, measurements, specifications, and notes for a selection of costumes created for the 124th Edition Blue Tour of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. All material in the collection dates from 1994. Circus acts documented through the costume designs include the Boulibekov riding act, clowns, Muratov and Koukan aerial act, ringmaster Jim Ragona, and elephant trainers Tom Heffnet and Buckles Woodcock. Animal attire is also represented, with designs for elephant blankets and carousel horse costumes. The designs are arranged by act or performer name. Multiple design within a file are ordered sequentially by design number. Some costumes documented in the collection were designed by Michael-Jon Costumes and created by the Eaves-Brooks Costume Company. less

Ben Pesner is a writer and digital content producer for the Broadway League, a national trade association for the Broadway industry. Until 2007, the Broadway League was known as the League of American Theatres. The Ben Pesner collection on the League of American Theatres dates from 1988 to 2006 and contains teaching and study guides; souvenir brochures and programs; press kits; and promotional photographs and slides relating to plays and musicals appearing on Broadway. The guides—for shows such as Ragtime, Jekyll & Hyde, Jane Eyre, Sunset Boulevard, and The Diary of Anne Frank— are the result of the work of Pesner and the League to promote Broadway plays and musicals, and make them accessible to a wide range of audiences. From the mid-1930s to 1959, he worked for Billboard magazine, writing the columns "U-Notes" and "Burlesque Bits," in addition to serving as the magazine's Coney Island correspondent. The Charlie Uno papers date from 1909 to 1959 and contain correspondence, clippings, press releases and kits, story drafts, and photographs, primarily related to Uno's work at Billboard. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs, including headshots of burlesque performers and other entertainers. The papers are arranged alphabetically by subject or document type. less
