Las Dos Antillas was a political organization founded by Rafael Serra, Rosendo Rodríguez, Arthur A. Schomburg (Secretary), Silvestre Pivalo (Treasurer), and others to support Cuba and Puerto Rico in their fight for independence from Spain. It was founded in 1892 and dissolved in 1898, at the end of the Spanish-American War. The minutes document the donation of weapons, money, and medical supplies to aid the independence struggles of Cuba and Puerto Rico. less

Miriam Jiménez Román (1951-2020) was an Afro-Puerto Rican activist, scholar, editor, author and professor who was a pioneer in the field of Afro-Latin@ studies. Jiménez Román's papers include personal and professional correspondence, contracts, research materials and personal writings, all of which helped to create and define a space for the cultural appreciation of the Afro-Latin@ community. Her family's experience as a working class family that migrated from Puerto Rico to New York helped shape her critique of racism, sexism and classism that persist in this multidimensional world. Jiménez Román contributions to the study of Afro-Latin@ cultures continues to influence the study and greater dialogue surrounding the complex identities of the Afro-Latin@ diaspora. less
