The item is a poetry notebook, dated circa 1820s-1840s, containing original and published vernacular poems with themes of death, loss, and spiritual consolation. The unbound volume probably originated in the Hudson River Valley of New York, based on references in the works. The identity of the notebook's creator is unknown. Poems tell of the deaths of promising youths, separation from family and friends occasioned by marriage or distant travels, the presence of God in nature, and illness. Dates referred to in the poems are not in chronological order, and only a few poems are dated. The last dated poem of April 20, 1843 describes a child's sighting of the Great Comet of that year. Notebook entries are written in ink by one person, probably a woman, with occasional misspellings; some entries are completed in different hands. The names Ann Catharine Hasard (i.e. Ann Catharine Hazard, Quaker educator, died 1830), Ruth Spencer or RS, "D .... Wing," and J. Haight appear as apparently unpublished poets. Quaker connections can be seen in poems by or about John Mott, Job Scott, Mary Peisley, and Hugh Judge, and in an elegy on the death of Mercy E. Read at Nine Partners Boarding School in Dutchess County. Some unattributed works can be traced to contemporary periodicals, hymns, and miscellanies of 18th- and 19th-century British and American poetry. Samuel Menashe (1925-2011) was an American poet. The collection comprises two autograph letters signed by Samuel Menashe to American author Meredith Hall (1949-), a recent acquaintance, dated April 17 and May 14, 2007. The letter of April 17 (one page with envelope), with his poem "April" written at top, thanks Hall for a book. His letter of May 14 (three pages with envelope), commenting briefly on her memoir Without a Map, contains two poems, "Consider the Buttercup" and "Nothing New." Edward Estlin Cummings was an American poet, novelist, playwright and essayist. He was a graduate of Harvard University (B.A. 1915, M.A. 1916). Le Baron Russell Briggs (1855-1934) was a professor, dean, and college president at Harvard University. E.E. Cummings submitted this unpublished academic essay, "Remarks Occassioned [sic] by Poetry" for a course he took at Harvard with Le Baron Russell Briggs, History and Principles of English Versification ("English 16"). Cummings places his literary analysis in the context of an entertaining conversation with a spirit, the discussion ranging from Beowulf to the modernists of his own time. Aside from the notation of a spelling error in the title, emendations appear to be made by Cummings. Kenneth Koch (1925-2002) was an American poet, playwright, essayist, screenwriter, novelist, and short-story writer. Kenneth Koch letters, 1961 and 1967, comprise his typed letter signed (2 pages) to "Don," dated [1961] February 10 at 69 Perry Street, New York City, and his typed letter signed (1 page) to poet James Schuyler ("Jimmy"), dated Thursday at 278 West 4th Street, with envelope postmarked 1967 June 1. The letter to Schuyler at Southampton, Long Island, encloses their collaborative poem "Titian Welds a Sculpture" (typescript with pencilled comment, 1 page), and a "mystery item," not present. The names James Schuyler & Kenneth Koch are typed below the poem's text. Koch's letter to Don discusses his work translating Haitian poetry and mentions his review of Frank O'Hara's poem "Second Avenue," appearing in the Partisan Review in 1961. Philip Levine (1928-2015) was an American poet who won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry for his work The Simple Truth (1994). He served as U.S. Poet Laureate from 2011 to 2012. Rick Campbell (1952-) is an American poet and former director of the poetry publishing firm Anhinga Press. The collection comprises nine items written by Philip Levine to Rick Campbell: three computer-generated typed letters signed and two autograph letters signed, dated 2001 May 24 to 2011 April 11; three autograph postcards signed, dated or postmarked 2000 to 2005; and an undated autograph letter signed, written on two unstamped postcards; also, a four-page document capturing email exchanges between Levine and Campbell, 2014 May 27 to 2015 February 7, regarding the publication of a poem by Levine in the journal Kestrel. A re-typed printout of the letter dated 2011 April 11, returned from an unidentified recipient with a note thanking Campbell for it, is included. The collection charts the epistolary friendship of the two poets, originating in Anhinga Press's publication of work by winners of the Philip Levine Prize for Poetry, sponsored by California State University at Fresno. A 16-line manuscript poem preceded by the heading "Written extempore, on Mr. and Mrs. Esdaile's departure from Boston for Great Britain," signed at end "Salley Apthorp," and dated "Sunday Morning 1777." Apthorp, describing herself as a young and "humble Muse," wishes the Esdailes a safe voyage with blessings of peace and health, and laments the loss of her dear friends in the hope that they will meet again. The poem is possibly an early work of the American poet Sarah Wentworth Apthorp Morton (1759-1846) of Boston, Massachusetts. Auden delivered this sermon during the Evensong service of October 24, 1965 at Christ Church, Oxford, at the invitation of College Chaplain John Gilling. Auden used the same title for one of four lectures given in memory of T. S. Eliot at the University of Kent, Canterbury, in October 1967.
