Alpheus Sherman (1779 or 1780-1866) was a New York City lawyer, judge, and politician. During the War of 1812 he served as a captain in the 41st U.S. Infantry Regiment under the command of Colonel Robert Bogardus, stationed at Sandy Hook, New Jersey and in Brooklyn, New York. The Alpheus Sherman papers, 1804-circa 1844, consist of a numbered series of correspondence and documents, including letters dating from his service in the War of 1812 during the years 1813-1815, and unnumbered documents pertaining to veterans' claims for military bounty lands, 1815-1817, with a printed speech given by Sherman in 1832. The bulk of the correspondence is personal, chiefly Sherman's letters to his wife Hester in New York City during his military service and his time in Albany as a State assemblyman and senator, mentioning his various activities. Correspondents include Cornelius S. Van Winkle, Congressman Silas Wright, Jr., Colonel Robert Bogardus, and other Sherman family members. less

Harry Hershfield (1885-1974) was an American cartoonist, humorist, and radio personality. The Harry Hershfield collection, dating from 1896 to 1979, documents his career and contains photographs, writings, letters, programs, scrapbooks, clippings, awards, certificates and a framed portrait. less

William Wilson (1756-1828) of Clermont, Columbia County, New York, was a physician, postmaster, and judge, and an estate manager for the Livingston family at Clermont. The William Wilson family papers, 1792-1884, comprise professional and personal correspondence of William Wilson and his sons Robert L. Wilson and William H. Wilson; correspondence among family members, including letters from Stephen B. Wilson during his U.S. Navy service; documents recording real property transactions, mostly in Columbia County; notebooks and maps of land surveys conducted in Columbia and Dutchess Counties, signed by John Wigram, Alexander Thompson and others; financial and legal documents; and printed ephemera. The papers chiefly pertain to Wilson's management of business affairs for the Livingston family, as well as for himself, and his own engagement in political and civic affairs in Columbia County; roles carried on to some extent by his son William H. Wilson. Also included are professional certificates and printed matter. William Wilson's notable correspondents include Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813), Edward P. Livingston (1779-1843), Nicholas Romayne (1756-1817), and Richard Varick (1753-1831). less

Opera director, concert singer, teacher, conductor and impresario, Dawson was the founder, president, and general manager of the National Negro Opera Company. Formed in 1941 due to Dawson's concern regarding the lack of opportunity for Afro-Americans in opera because of racial discrimination, for over 20 years the Company presented such productions as Verdi's Aida and La Traviata, and C.C. White's Ouanga. Among the featured opera singers were Minto Cato, Lillian Evanti, Muriel Rahn, Edward Boatner, and Robert McFerrin. Ms. Dawson also founded the Cardwell School of Music and the prize winning Cardwell-Dawson Chorus. This document, issued by the Compañía Asiática de La Habana, is a work contract and certificate of identity (cédula) for 22-year-old Chy Anung of Yn Cong, a Chinese laborer hired at the Portuguese colony of Macao, China, for eight years of indentured servitude in Cuba. From about 1847 to 1874, such workers, called colonos asiáticos, were transported by merchants in large numbers. The text of the printed form, completed on each side in manuscript, is in Spanish on the front and in Chinese characters on the back. In addition to the worker's name and residence, it provides the Spanish forename assigned to him (Honorato), his identification number (9527), and the name of the ship to Havana (Maria Elizabeth). The document sets forth the terms of transportation to Cuba and conditions of employment there, as contracted between the worker and Vargas y Compañía, representing the firm Compañía Unida Torices, Ferrán y Dupierris, or anyone holding the contract. It is signed by L[ourenço] Marques, Procurador; by Nicasio Cañete y Moral, the Spanish Consul in China; by Vargas y Compañía; and by Chy Anung, as shown by two Chinese characters representing his last name 崔 above his first name 明, and his fingerprint. These are repeated under the printed translation on the back, containing manuscript characters identifying his age and town of origin. Also noted there are four transfers of Chy Anung's contract between March 1859 and January 1861: from M[arcial] Dupierris to Fermín Morales, from Morales to Ramón Jaquete, from Jaquete to the Sociedad de Pardiñas y Rivas, and from José A.
