Charles (Borromeo) Mills, 1914-1982, was an American composer of chamber music, orchestral works including movie music and ballets, and vocal music including sacred choral works. He became a Roman Catholic in 1944. Morris Hochberg was a conductor and violinist, and his wife Sylvia was a noted pianist. Their daughter Rena was born in 1944. Mills lived in New York City, and the Hochbergs in Detroit throughout the correspondence. 83 ALS in ink or pencil from Charles Mills, 3 ALS from Charles Mills and his wife Pat or Patricia, 3 ALS from Patricia alone, and 1 ALS from a later wife Selma, all to Morris Hochberg, Morris and Sylvia, or Morris, Sylvia and Rena Hochberg ; 1 ALS from Charles Mills to oboist Lare Wardrup, sent in care of Morris Hochberg. Anne Margaret Graham was born in 1801, the youngest daughter of Elizabeth Susanna Davenport Graham, the children's book writer, and her husband, Thomas Graham a lawyer, of Edmond Castle in the village of Hayton, Carlisle, Cumbria in England. In 1823 she married Edward Polhill (1789-1859), with whom she had at least five children. For some years the Polhills lived in France. Anne Margaret Polhill died in Brighton on November 6, 1882. Fourty-four total drawings in a red morocco-backed sketchbook with red paper boards (watermark = "HORNE / 1818"). Most drawings in ink over pencil, eight in ink wash, two in watercolor. Scenes feature mostly Parisian characters and settings, many with humorous captions. less

This is a synthetic collection covering the years 1854 to 1892 with some material still undated. Strengths of the collection include nearly 30 poems or poem fragments and Whitman's autograph revision of the "Analysis of Poems" by Dr. R. Bucke. This essay was written for Bucke's authorized biography (Walt Whitman, 1883) and Whitman's extensive revisions were incorporated before publication. The correspondence includes two longer runs, one to William O' Connor and the other to his wife Ellen O'Connor. The O'Connors were active in a number of social causes, as well as devoted advocates of Whitman and his writing. William O'Connor, author of The Good Gray Poet (1866), was one of Whitman's closest friends until an argument in 1873 caused a break in their friendship. Others who figure prominently in the Berg Collection's Whitman materials include John Burroughs (1837-1921), nature writer, literary critic, and author of Notes on Walt Whitman as Poet and Person (1867); Peter Doyle and Harry Stafford, young friends of Whitman's; and Richard Maurice Bucke (1837-1902), Whitman's authorized biographer, friend and literary executor.
