Born in 1945, Jack Briece was an American composer, organist and pianist, video artist, educator, and author, whose creative output was original and inventive. Most of this collection contains Briece’s diary, written on index cards and documenting his personal study of astrology, planetary movements, and the I-Ching, which informed every aspect of his life and inspired much of his output as an artist. However, of particular interest are the music series and the records surrounding Briece’s travels in Finland. The music materials demonstrate Briece’s use and personal development of conventional as well as modern and experimental orchestration techniques. The materials related to Finland represent a particularly active and creative time for the composer, his involvement with the newly developing videotape medium, and the culmination of much of his work up until his untimely death in 1988. less

Renzo Viola, born Lorenzo Viola in Sicily in 1889, was a piano teacher and composer in New York City and in Lindenhurst, Long Island. He composed music for the silent movie, The Trifling Woman ; invented an educational toy piano named Alice in Musicland ; founded the Long Island Harmony Band and the L.I. Drum Corps ; and wrote songs for the Rotary Club. Shortly after World War I, Copeland stayed in Kronberg with the family of Margarethe of Hesse, Princess of Prussia, sister of Kaiser Wilhelm. Biographical and autobiographical writings, letters, photoprints and drawings, 3 musical scores, and other items relating to the career of George Copeland. During the Second World War she organized and performed in hundreds of lunch time concerts at the National Gallery which had been emptied because of the threat of air raids. Marjorie Yates, a pianist and friend of Myra Hess, was born in England and moved in 1926 to the United States, where she taught music until 1968. Henriette Michelson was a piano teacher at The Juilliard School in New York City during the 1930's and 1940's, and later a resident of Jerusalem. Auguste Kolar was a Bohemian pianist active in Prague and Vienna from about 1859 to 1874. Born in Prague, she studied there with Josef Proksch. In 1865 she performed a 2-piano work in a concert with Clara Schumann. After her marriage to Dr. Heinrich Auspitz in 1868, she took the name Auguste Auspitz-Kolar. During the summers of 1869 and 1870, she performed in London.
