The Edward S. Lewis Papers, 1918-1986 (bulk 1948-1986), consist primarily of printed material. In the General series there are: correspondence, with letters from Senator Walter Mondale and Robert C. Weaver; memoranda; minutes; travel itineraries and printed matter. Lewis' trips to East and West Africa, leading delegations of educators and peace advocates, are well documented in the collection. Also documented, are the anti-apartheid activities of the Federation of Protestant Welfare Agency, Lewis' tenure on the New York State and the Presidential Consumer advisory councils; and the Manhattanville tenants and condominium owners' advocacy organization for which he was a board member. less

The Works Progress Administration (WPA) of the U.S. government was the major relief agency of Franklin D. Roosevelt's "New Deal". Supplanting the Civil Works Administration (an emergency temporary work relief program, 1933-1934), the WPA employed over two million Americans before its liquidation in 1941. Collection consists of typed, carbon copies and near-print copies of reports on various projects sponsored by the New York Public Library and the Queens Borough Public Library which utilized WPA funds for relief workers. Reports cover projects to extend library service to the public through research work, compilation of bibliographies, and book preparation. Reports provide detailed information about personnel and production. Also, two American Library Association reports on work relief projects. less

The New York Foundation is a philanthropic foundation, established in New York City in 1909 for the purpose of providing financial support towards "altruistic purposes, charitable, benevolent, educational, or otherwise." For over a century, the Foundation has awarded grants to charitable and non-profit organizations in numerous fields, including public health, workers' rights, literacy, child welfare, AIDS research and treatment, women's suffrage, racial equity, legal aid, the alleviation of poverty, civil rights, immigrants' rights, and education reform, among many others. Although some earlier grants supported programs in other areas of the country, the bulk of the Foundation's grants since 1975 have been awarded to organizations in New York City, with a focus on grassroots community organizations. less
