William Wilson (1756-1828) of Clermont, Columbia County, New York, was a physician, postmaster, and judge, and an estate manager for the Livingston family at Clermont. The William Wilson family papers, 1792-1884, comprise professional and personal correspondence of William Wilson and his sons Robert L. Wilson and William H. Wilson; correspondence among family members, including letters from Stephen B. Wilson during his U.S. Navy service; documents recording real property transactions, mostly in Columbia County; notebooks and maps of land surveys conducted in Columbia and Dutchess Counties, signed by John Wigram, Alexander Thompson and others; financial and legal documents; and printed ephemera. The papers chiefly pertain to Wilson's management of business affairs for the Livingston family, as well as for himself, and his own engagement in political and civic affairs in Columbia County; roles carried on to some extent by his son William H. Wilson. Also included are professional certificates and printed matter. William Wilson's notable correspondents include Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813), Edward P. Livingston (1779-1843), Nicholas Romayne (1756-1817), and Richard Varick (1753-1831). less

Alexander E. MacDonald, M.D. (1845-1906) was a prominent American physician and psychiatrist, and a leader in the development of New York City's public institutions for the treatment of mentally-ill persons. The collection consists of Dr. Alexander MacDonald's scrapbook of entertainments held for patients in New York City public hospitals on Blackwell's Island and Ward's Island, 1873-1875, and several letters and documents relating to his professional activities, 1897-1902. The scrapbook, dated 1873 August 30-1874 June 19 and 1875 June 9, contains pasted newspaper clippings and programs documenting part of a series of weekly entertainments initiated by MacDonald for patients of Charity Hospital on Blackwell's Island (now Roosevelt Island), 1873-1874, with an 1875 clipping for an entertainment at the New York City Asylum for the Insane on Ward's Island. Letters and documents chiefly pertain to MacDonald's attendance at professional conferences abroad, certifying his membership and credentials; there is also a personal letter from George E. Dodge (1849-1904) to MacDonald, 1902 June 28, regarding MacDonald's work on Ward's Island. A civil service flyer and a half-tone photographic portrait of MacDonald are included. less

Simon Gratz (1840-1925) was an American lawyer and philanthropist of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Simon Gratz collection of letters of prominent American physicians and surgeons comprises sixty autograph items, chiefly letters. Each name is represented by one item; an additional autograph item written by Samuel Bard is not found. Prominent letter writers include Jacob Bigelow, Silvester Gardiner, David Hosack, and Samuel L. Mitchill. Recipients are chiefly persons in the medical field, but clergymen, scientists and other professions are also represented. Among them are James H. Armsby, Amos Eaton, Jedidiah Morse, and William H. Seward. Autograph items include several death certificates, and part of a medical work by Edward Miller (1760-1812). less

John Wakefield Francis (1789-1861) was a physician who co-founded the New York Academy of Medicine. He served as the second president of the Academy, taught at Bellevue Hospital, wrote medical texts, and edited professional journals. Collection consists of correspondence, financial papers, writings, by-laws and minutes, and related papers of Francis and others. Incoming correspondence, 1809-1861, from colleagues, friends and family members and outgoing correspondence, 1808-1860, contain letters of recommendation, petitions and accounts of medical cases. Correspondence of others includes letters to Francis's associates and family members. Financial documents, 1798-1851, are accounts, receipts, receipt books, checks, and collection notices. Writings are speeches, lectures and notes of Francis and others.
