Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) was an American poet, writer, physician, and professor who was part of the New England-based writers group called the Fireside Poets. "The Chambered Nautilus" autograph manuscript fragment, dated November 30, 1886, consists of the last stanza of Wendell's poem, along with his signature and location.
Biographical/historical information
Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) was an American poet, writer, physician, and professor who was part of the New England-based writers group called the Fireside Poets. Some of his best-known poems include "Old Ironsides" and "The Last Leaf."
Holmes was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard University in 1829. He received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1836.
Holmes died in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1894.
