Justin Winsor (1831-1897) was an American librarian and historian. He was superintendent of the Boston Public Library from 1868 to 1877, and librarian of Harvard University from 1877 until his death. The collection contains letters to Justin Winsor, as Superintendent of the Boston Public Library, from other librarians and Albany publisher Joel Munsell, relative to the purchase and exchange of listed books and periodicals, 1869-1874, with two letters to his predecessor Charles Coffin Jewett on the same subject, 1866-1867. Winsor's letters to Gordon L. Ford, Worthington C. Ford, and Paul L. Ford, 1887-1892, concern historical and bibliographical matters, as does a copy of Charles Deane's letter to Justin Winsor of 1877 March 10, with Winsor's related note to George Henry Moore (1823-1892) copied below it. A few invoices and receipts for publications, and Winsor's completed questionnaire for Appleton's Cyclopaedia of American Biography, 1888, are also present. less

Joan Baum was a librarian and amateur photographer. Baum's work was focused on creating and collecting a visual index of contemporary Western ballet and opera of the 1960s and 1970s. The collection includes her original photographs, slides, and negatives, as well as prints ordered from other professional dance photographers (including Fred Fehl and Martha Swope) and official portraits requested from ballet companies. less

Gertrude Finkel (1898-1994) was a librarian with The New York Public Library, associated for many years with the Library's Hamilton Fish Park Branch on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The Branch opened in 1909 at 388 East Houston Street, serving a predominantly immigrant population. It closed in 1958 to prepare for removal to a new location, reopening at 415 East Houston Street in 1960. The collection consists of a scrapbook (1 volume, disbound), dated 1931-1963, containing watercolor drawings and pasted photographs and clippings depicting activities at the Hamilton Fish Park Branch Library, accompanied by some loose items and personal correspondence of Gertrude Finkel, dated 1940-1970. Content focuses on reader services and community programs at the Branch, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s, evoking the ethnic makeup of the Lower East Side, especially its Jewish heritage. A few later staff photos mark the transition from the "old HF" to the new location. less

The Jean Blackwell Hutson photographs, dated 1890s to 1990s, were compiled by Jean Blackwell Hutson (1914-1998), a librarian who served as curator of the Schomburg Collection from 1948 to 1972, then chief of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture from 1972 to 1980.
