Gertrude Finkel (1898-1994) was a librarian with The New York Public Library, associated for many years with the Library's Hamilton Fish Park Branch on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The Branch opened in 1909 at 388 East Houston Street, serving a predominantly immigrant population. It closed in 1958 to prepare for removal to a new location, reopening at 415 East Houston Street in 1960. The collection consists of a scrapbook (1 volume, disbound), dated 1931-1963, containing watercolor drawings and pasted photographs and clippings depicting activities at the Hamilton Fish Park Branch Library, accompanied by some loose items and personal correspondence of Gertrude Finkel, dated 1940-1970. Content focuses on reader services and community programs at the Branch, mainly during the 1930s and 1940s, evoking the ethnic makeup of the Lower East Side, especially its Jewish heritage. Elizabeth Blackwell remains unidentified. Another volume of sketches by her, which was until recently paired with this album, bore the ink annotations: "Elizabeth Blackwell 1835-37-39" and also "The Honble. Mrs. Arthur Thellusson from EB -- 106 Eaton Square." The home address of Arthur Thellusson is listed as "88 Eaton square" in the 1843 edition of Kelly's Post Office London Directory. The same directory lists a John Blackwell, Esq. at "Cottage Rd., Eaton Sq.". Album of landscape sketches (21 in ink and wash; 28 in pencil) recording a journey through the Rhine River Valley in the summer of 1835. The perspective of many of the drawings suggests they were made on a boat; includes scenes of mountains, castles, ruins, valleys, etc. Each drawing has a manuscript title (some in French); "June 1835" is in ink on the front pastedown. With the art supplier's stamp of "C. Smith late Smith Warner Co. Piccadilly, removed to 34 Mary Le Bone St. Regent Circus Piccadilly." Contemporary morocco-backed marbled boards. less

Sketchbook of drawings by an unidentified artist, recording scenes of the Peak District in Derbyshire as well as country houses and churches in Essex and Hertfordshire. Most drawings are undated; of those with dates, the earliest is September 1821 and the latest is May 1822. Many scenes include the figure of a gentleman with walking stick and hat, sometimes seen with a small geologist's hammer. In one scene ("Cromford Rocks"), he is using the hammer to carve the initials "B C" into a rock. Bound in half red roan over blue-gray boards, paper with the watermark of "[RUSE T]URNERS [18]15." On the front pastedown is a contemporary book label (engraved armorial crest of falcon clutching a sheaf of wheat, above engraved initials "T. [D?]"); on the rear pastedown is another [later?] book label (woodcut of a tree, man in hat reclining underneath, cottage in the background). less
