John J. McNamara (1897-1988) was a New York City-based architect. McNamara—both in partnership with architect Thomas W. Lamb, and individually—was known for designing and renovating several Broadway theatres. The John J. McNamara theatre architecture papers contain correspondence, notes, and drawings for McNamara's renovation and restoration projects in the Manhattan theatre district between 1958 and 1983. The Belasco, Winter Garden, St. James, and Little Theatres are represented in the papers, as well as Carnegie Hall. Also included are McNamara's early drawings for the 42nd Street redevelopment project, and general correspondence related to McNamara and Lamb's work as architects. less

Regina Kellerman (1923-2009) was an architectural historian who served as an early director of research for the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission, and later become the founder and first director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. Her pioneering research, both in New York and the Netherlands, led to her correctly identifying the location of New York City's first City Hall, a conclusion borne out by the subsequent excavation of the site during the early 1970s. The collection covers Kellerman's career as an architectural historian and preservationist and includes correspondence, reports and notes, architectural drawings and plans, and photographs and slides which she generated and gathered in the course of her investigation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods located in New York City and the surrounding area. less

Arthur Hays Sulzberger was the publisher of xxThe New York Timesxx from 1935 until 1961 and chairman of the board of The New York Times Company from 1961 until 1968. While he was publisher, circulation of The Times almost doubled; the editorial page developed a reputation for strong opinions; news events were subjected to more analysis and coverage of specialized topics was strengthened; new sections and departments were created for food, fashion, and women; and the overall style of the paper became less rigid and more aesthetically pleasing.
