Correspondence, business records, and miscellaneous manuscripts of members of the Callister family, chiefly Henry Callister, merchant (ca. 1716-ca. 1768) and his wife, Sarah Trippe Callister (1731-1805), including items about Mrs. Callister's schools for girls in Chestertown and Baltimore (1783-1788). Henry Callister came to Maryland as factor for Foster Cunliffe Sons, of Liverpool, England, and was resident at Oxford, Talbot County, and "Townside", an estate in Kent and Queen Anne's Counties, Md. Original manuscripts have not been counted, but photostatic reproductions fill 869 pages, plus an index volume. They contain a wealth of information concerning economic, mercantile, political, social, and cultural conditions on the Eastern Shore during the period, and include correspondence with persons in Great Britain; with Rev. Thomas Bacon (came to Maryland, 1745, d. 1768), compiler of The Laws of Maryland, organizer of the first charity school in the British colonies, and a pioneer in relations with the African American population; with Robert Morris, merchant of Talbot County, and his son, Robert Morris, Jr. (1734-1806), financier of the American Revolution; and with members of the Bolton, Bordley, Comegys, Earle, Eccleston, Goldsborough, Ridout, Gordon, Hesselius, Hollyday, Lloyd, Ringgold, Wright, and many other Maryland families. less

Minutes of meetings concerning New York City charities attended by justices, aldermen, church wardens, and vestrymen (1694-1747). The meeting attendees were charged with the care of the poor, the administration of the Alms House (1736-1747), the appointment of the schoolmaster, and related civic duties. These papers document attendance and proceedings to these meetings. This volume is a 19th century transcription. less

This collection contains council minutes from the Indian Congress at Albany that took place in June and July of 1754. In addition to the minutes are copies of documents from 1684 to 1754 concerning previous treaties and propositions between New York and various Indian tribes. These items include propositions from the Onondaga and Cayuga tribes (August 2, 1684); letters among Governor Dogan, the British Lords of Trade, and the Governor of Canada; articles of peace proposed on December 13, 1665; and the civil lists of New York (1693) less

Letters patent from King George II, through the Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of New York George Clarke, granting 2,600 acres of land to Anne, Sarah, Catherine, George, Elizabeth, and Mary Bradley, from the vacated patent of Captain John Evans, in Ulster County, New York. The document stipulates that they are to pay a yearly rent of two shillings, six pence per 100 acres, and that the use of gold, silver, and certain trees is reserved for the Royal Navy (March 6, 1739) less

The first is a proposal for the advancement of religion in New York and other parts of America, presented to the Society for Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (1713). The second item is a catalogue of books given towards laying the foundation of a public library in New York City, dated May 13, 1715. less

William Coventry (1715-1774) was a prominent merchant of New York City and the island of St. Christopher (St. Kitts) in the West Indies. He married Elizabeth Hart in 1739. The collection contains letters written to him at New York and St. Kitts, 1750-1768, and legal documents, 1758 and 1766, chiefly concerning business matters to be handled by Coventry while at St. Kitts. Correspondents include members of the Reade, Livingston and Beekman families of New York writing from various locations, especially David Beekman on the island of St. Eustatius. Two powers of attorney, 1758 and 1766, appoint Coventry to collect debts at St. Kitts; the 1766 document is by David Beekman and Nicholas Cruger, merchants at St. Croix. There are also letters with a related power of attorney concerning the Dutch ship Stadt Rotterdam, libelled at the Vice-Admiralty Court at St. Kitts, dated 1758. It was captured by the privateer sloop-of-war Tyger, whose owners included Joseph Reade, John Waddell, and John and William Livingston. The collection also contains a letter dated May 18, 1758 from Sarah Garnett to Coventry's wife Elizabeth with her response written on it, and two brief letters to Elizabeth Coventry from George Coventry at Albany, 1759, regarding monies sent. less

The Mercantile Collection, 1726-1950, is a synthetic collection documenting mercantile and other business activities from the early-17th to the mid-20th centuries, especially in the northeastern United States. It consists of papers and records created by persons, firms, and companies engaged chiefly in trade, finance, insurance, mining, railroad management, shipping, and whaling. A few items pertain to manufacturing and real estate. Transatlantic commerce in the colonial and early-national period, and the early railroad industry in America, are strongly represented. Notable material includes the assorted papers of New York City and Philadelphia merchants, among them members of the Pemberton family of Philadelphia; Vice-Admiralty court proceedings; and the incomplete ledger of an 18th-century New York City druggist. less

The Stokes Family Genealogical Research Papers consist of genealogical research materials compiled and collected by Anson Phelps Stokes, author of the Stokes Records (1910), and his daughter, Helen Phelps Stokes on the Phelps and Stokes families, who were primarily bankers and merchants in New England and New York in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Materials in the collection include correspondence, manuscripts of genealogical works, family trees, genealogical pamphlets, notes, numerous copies and a small number of original family documents. Highlights include correspondence (1843-1847) of Anson Greene Phelps and his daughters, Caroline Phelps Stokes and Elizabeth Phelps James and an 1867 safe conduct for James Stokes signed by William H. Members of the Tayler-Cooper family of New York include John Tayler, 1742-1829, a merchant in Albany; his son-in-law Charles Dekay Cooper, 1769-1831; and grandson John Tayler Cooper. Tayler had extensive land holdings in New York State, held various state offices and served as acting governor in 1817. John Tayler Cooper, a lawyer, was also a general in the New York State Cavalry and director of insurance and railroad corporations in northern New York. Collection consists of correspondence, accounts and business papers, New York State land papers, and various Tayler-Cooper account books. Correspondence is of John Tayler, 1770-1833; Charles D. Cooper, 1804-1832; and John T. Cooper, 1819-1880. Topics include business matters, land holdings in New York State, politics, and social and economic conditions. Bulk of the collection is accounts and business papers, 1744-1879. Also, land papers, 1800-ca. 1881, for Albany and elsewhere in New York State; and account books, 1789-1841. less

This manuscript notebook was created in the early 18th century by an unknown student and likely served as an alternative to a printed textbook. It contains problems, examples, and calculations related to navigation and is heavily illustrated with charts, tables, projections of spheres, and maps. Includes sections on plain sailing, oblique sailing, sailing to windward, sailing in a current's way, sailing by tables of inspection, and sailing by the true sea chart. Also included are sections whose purpose for inclusion is less clear, including a portion of a journal of a voyage from the "Lizzard of England" to Cape Henry in Virginia (1705) which was presumably copied from another source, as well as an "account by John Goodwin, Master" dated January 1725/26, an entry titled "Carolina Yacht in Helvoet Sluys Road," and two pages from a log about a voyage involving the Kind of England as a passenger Bookplate of former owner, Robert Bristow of London, Esq. is intact, and an etching of Queen Anne has been glued into the volume less

Rufus King (1838-1924) was a banker by profession as well as a respected genealogist. The son of Rufus Sylvester and Phoebe Odell King, his New England ancestors included the revolutionary war veteran and New York State Senator Rufus King, after whom he was named. The Rufus King genealogical research papers consist primarily of the notes and correspondence generated and collected by King in the course of tracing his family's lineage, as well as an assortment of family papers dating from 1720 to 1866. less

William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, Long Island, was a grandson of William Salmon (b. 1610) who emigrated from England to Southold in 1635. The collection includes the original manuscript (1 v.) known and published as the Salmon Records, a private register of marriages and deaths, 1696-1815, of residents and persons associated with the town of Southold, Suffolk County, New York, as well as a separate manuscript index (1 v.) compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860. The register was started by William Salmon (1684-1759) of Southold, and continued by members of the Salmon family. The volume contains what appear to be two separate registers, later bound together and re-paginated in red ink as one. The first, a register of deaths with a few marriages, spans 1696-1815; the second, of marriages, spans [1702]-1811. The manuscript index compiled by Joseph H. Petty in 1860 conforms to the re-pagination. less

The Smith family of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, N.Y. is descended from John "Rock" Smith, fl. 1665. Smith family documents, 1736-1942, consist primarily of deeds and other contracts concerning the Smith family of Brookhaven, N.Y. The collection includes indentures for land transactions, records of road surveys, wills, articles of agreement for employment, tenant leases, subpoenas, land search records, specifications for building a house, mortgages, accounts, receipts for payment of back taxes and a small amount of correspondence. Also present are inventories of household items, farm implements, and livestock in the possession of Joshua and Lucy Smith at the time of his death in 1811, and of their son Richard Wallace Smith's household items at the time of his death in 1868, as well as a photocopy of a Smith family tree. less
