Born and raised in Brooklyn, by middle-class parents from Barbados, Thomas Russell Jones graduated from St. Johns University Law School in 1937. A first lieutenant during World War II, he led companies of Black troops during the Allied invasion of Normandy, and participated in the liberation of the Alsace province of France. His professional activities included a law practice as a young Black lawyer during the 1950s; his leadership role in the founding of the Unity Democratic Club in Brooklyn in 1960, and of the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, together with Senator Robert Kennedy, in 1966; and a prestigious public service career, first in the New York State Assembly for the 17th District in 1962, as a delegate to New York State's Constitutional Convention in 1966, and then, in 1968. as a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. He retired from the bench in 1978, and redirected his energy into advocacy for children, public speaking, and community activism in general. Block Communities, Inc. (BCI) was a community organizing anti-poverty agency that operated in New York City from 1966 until 1968. Originating in East Harlem, the group consisted of community organizers who moved onto a city block, surveyed the residents, and spearheaded various community development programs. This collection consists of administrative materials, daily and weekly reports by block workers, and publicity materials that include moving images. The collection also holds latter day reflections from BCI alumni. less

Arnold P. Johnson (1910-1994), a native of Cuba, was a businessman, labor organizer, community activist, a World War II veteran, founder of the Harlem Small Business Chamber of Commerce, and resident of Harlem. The Arnold P. Johnson papers are comprised of printed meeting minutes for community organizations in which Johnson held official or volunteer positions. less

Jeff Kisseloff (1955 - ) is an American writer and oral historian. This collection (1986-2000) contains sound recordings of interviews Kisseloff conducted for his published and unpublished books and articles. Two books were published from these interviews: You Must Remember This: An oral history of Manhattan from the 1890s to World War II and Generation on Fire: Voices of protest from the 1960s. The interviews for a book on the integration of baseball and a book on early rock and roll were never published. less

Simon Williamson (1908-1963) was a Garveyite and Trotskyist activist and journalist whose documented work dates back to 1929. Williamson notably wrote for The Kansas City American, far-left publications The Militant and The New Militant, and the Federal Works Progress Administration's Federal Writers' Project. The Simon Williamson papers include correspondence, ephemera, and political writings in relation to Williamson's activism in New York City. less
