The collection consists of personal correspondence and documents of members of the Winthrop family of New London and Boston, and related Parkin, Rogers, and Moore families, comprising: letters to Mary Winthrop (Mrs. Richard W. Parkin) 1781-1806, 1826, 1846, from Richard W. Parkin, brothers Joseph Winthrop and Thomas L. Winthrop, nephew Joseph A. Winthrop and brother-in-law William Parkin; letters to Mary A. Hitchcock (Mrs. John Still Winthrop Parkin) from Ethan A. Hitchcock, 1818, and Thomas Parkin, 1819, 1820; letters from Augusta Temple Winthrop (Mrs. J. Smyth Rogers) to her father Thomas L. Winthrop, brother James Bowdoin [James Bowdoin Winthrop], 1820-1828 and Mrs. James Bowdoin at Paris, 1807; letters from J. Smyth Rogers, M.D. to Thomas L. Winthrop, 1821, and to Rogers from his maternal uncle Thomas Moore of North Carolina and cousin Charles H. Moore (1844). Also included are a genealogical record of the Moore family of New York City and other locations by John Moore, 1819, copied 1839, with additions; a bond from John Chew of New London to James Bowdoin of Boston, 1769, endorsed by Elizabeth Temple, 1806; and an insurance policy for the brig Neptune, 1798. A note records the death of "my dear Mr. Parkin" on 6 September, with a copied memorial to William Stewart and Richard W. Parkin, taken from the press during the yellow fever epidemic of 1798. less

Sarah Yardley Beers (1876-1946) was the great-niece of abolitionist James Miller McKim (1810-1874) and his wife Sarah A. McKim (1813-1891). Born in North Carolina, Sarah McKim Yardley was the daughter of Ellen Mulvany (1843-1924) of Millersville, Pennsylvania and William Buckman Yardley (1848-1885) of Pennsylvania and Delaware. Her mother married Edwin Ruthven Armstrong in 1886. In 1904 Sarah McKim Yardley married businessman Louis Gilbert Beers (1862-1935). Sarah Yardley Beers, as she was known, was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an officer of the Broad Seal Chapter of Trenton, New Jersey. The Sarah Yardley Beers family papers, 1807-1983, comprise her genealogical correspondence and research papers relating to her maternal ancestry, particularly the McKim, Miller and Mulvany families of Pennsylvania; her mother's school autograph album and photograph album; family photographs and certificates; clippings and ephemera; and a Bible containing Miller family data and her parents' wedding certificate. Also present is a small amount of genealogical correspondence of her son Yardley Beers, 1965 and 1983; an engraved portrait of Lucy McKim Garrison by Gustav Kruell, circa 1890s; and printed materials. less

Captain Percival Drayton (1812-1865) of Charleston, South Carolina and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was a distinguished U.S. Navy officer who served in the Union Navy during the Civil War. The Percival Drayton family papers, 1827-1967, chiefly document Percival Drayton's naval career, particularly during the Civil War. Drayton's papers, 1827-1865, comprise correspondence, naval orders and reports, a diary, financial papers, and certificates. The remainder, 1845-1967, consists of papers created or received by other Drayton family members and relatives, as well as ephemera, photographs, and printed material, mostly pertaining to Percival Drayton. Also included are letters written by an unidentified relative, a naval notebook, and later family correspondence regarding Drayton's naval service, as well as two manifest books for shipments of tobacco in the Maryland-District of Columbia area, 1803-1817, their connection to the Drayton family being unclear. less
