In 1963, Robert Stein, as field manager for the Chicago Ethical Society's Commission on Race and Equality, oversaw "Creative Inter-Racial Recreational Programs" such as Inter-Racial Vacations (summer camps in the North for Southern African American children), tutorial programs, and remedial classes for adult African Americans and whites. The Robert and Anita Stein papers document the efforts of the American Ethical Union to further interracial harmony in the South through social interaction: seminars, tutorials, and summer camps for African American children. less

Personal papers consisting of correspondence and other material related to Schein's role and activities in Mississippi, a personal account of the Summer Project, and an incomplete article about her experiences as a volunteer. Four participating organizations of the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO) are represented through speeches, field reports, minutes, fact sheets, news clippings, and various printed matter, as well as data concerning the Freedom School operated by the COFO. Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party material contains documents related to the August 6, 1964 State Convention of the party which elected delegates to the 1964 National Convention of the Democratic Party in Atlantic City, N.J.; draft minutes; membership lists of nominating and resolution committees; voter rolls from the National Convention; and one copy of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party Newsletter related to the Congressional challenge. less

Iris Greenberg was a field worker for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Mississippi, 1963-1964. Greenberg grew up in Queens, New York. She received a BS degree from University of Wisconsin in 1963, and a MFA degree from SUNY New Paltz. At some point, she lived in Israel where she worked on a kibbutz; after moving to Woodstock, New York, she taught and worked for the Welfare Department. She passed away in 1978. This collection consists of printed matter, collected by Iris Greenberg, consisting of letters, telegrams, minutes, reports, and memoranda from the 1963 voter registration drive organized by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Mississippi; material related to the Arkansas Project; and printed matter from the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer Project organized by the Council of Federated Organizations, including some material on the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party and Freedom Schools. less

The Medical Committee for Human Rights (MCHR) was created at the request of the Council of Freedom Organizations (COFO), which supervised the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC)'s Mississippi Summer Project during the summer of 1964. The purpose of the organization was to recruit health care personnel and supplies for civil rights workers who participated in the Mississippi Freedom Summer Project and local Black residents. MCHR had its national office in New York City; it was governed by an executive board and executive director. There were also chapters in various cities around the country. The Medical Committee for Human Rights records are mostly related to the Committee's activities during the summer of 1964, with some records for the summers of 1965-1966. The records consist of administrative and general correspondence, some reports, memoranda, minutes, financial records, membership and fund raising files, committee files, material from chapters, and printed literature. less

This collection consists of assorted printed material gathered by photographer Robert E. "Bob" Fletcher concerning the civil rights movement between 1962-1967. Included is printed material for the March on Washington, 1963; Free Southern Theatre, 1967; Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, 1963-1964; Freedom Summer WATS Line Messages, 1964; and Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, 1964. Also included are three issues of Broadside Topical Song Magazine; and other miscellaneous newspaper clippings. less

Bill Strickland is a scholar, activist, and professor emeritus of the Department of Afro-American Studies at University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst. A native of Boston, Strickland graduated from Boston Latin School and Harvard University. After serving in the Marine Corps, he became active in civil rights and Black liberation work, serving as Executive Director of the Northern Student Movement; working in Mississippi for the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party; and serving as the Northern Coordinator of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party's Congressional Challenge. He was a founding member of Malcolm X's Organization of Afro-American Unity in 1964, and in 1969, he also was a founding member of the Institute of the Black World in Atlanta. Strickland was a key member of the faculty in Afro-American Studies at UMass Amherst, teaching history and politics, and serving as Director of the W. E. B. Du Bois Papers. Strickland consulted on various documentaries including Eyes on the Prize (1987), about the civil rights movement; Malcolm X: Make It Plain (1994), for which he also wrote the companion book, also published in 1994; and W. E. B. Du Bois: A Biography in Four Voices (1996). He retired in 2013. This collection consists of the research files of William Strickland on various topics. These topics include the documentary Eyes on the Prize, for which Strickland served as a consultant, and Jesse Jackson and the Rainbow/Push Coalition (now the National Rainbow Coalition); Strickland worked on Jackson's presidential campaign in 1988. Other topics include the Black Panther Party, Black Radical Congress, Arna Bontemps, H. Rap Brown, Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), Benjamin Chavis and the NAACP, civil rights leaders and movements, Katherine Dunham, Maulana Karanga, racism, and Roots (television program). Most of the files include notes and some writing by Strickland, but the majority of the files consist of printed matter (clippings, articles, mailings, conference materials), correspondence, and writing by some of the previously mentioned individuals. Additionally, there is one folder of correspondence to and from Strickland, mostly unrelated to the research files. less
