The Frederick O'Neal Papers document the theatrical, labor, and civic activities of this actor and labor leader, mostly from the 1940s through the 1990s. The collection consists primarily of personal papers, correspondence, speeches and addresses, writing, and information about the theatrical productions in which he appeared. There are also research materials about the 19th century African-American actor, Ira Aldridge, and files pertaining to the many organizations with which O'Neal was associated. less

The Jean Sindab papers date from 1970 to 1995 and contain professional files that document subjects of interest to Sindab; organizations for which she worked; conferences that she organized or attended; and local, grassroots, and governmental initiatives related to environmental and racial justice in the United States, Latin America, and Africa. Alpheus Sherman (1779 or 1780-1866) was a New York City lawyer, judge, and politician. During the War of 1812 he served as a captain in the 41st U.S. Infantry Regiment under the command of Colonel Robert Bogardus, stationed at Sandy Hook, New Jersey and in Brooklyn, New York. The Alpheus Sherman papers, 1804-circa 1844, consist of a numbered series of correspondence and documents, including letters dating from his service in the War of 1812 during the years 1813-1815, and unnumbered documents pertaining to veterans' claims for military bounty lands, 1815-1817, with a printed speech given by Sherman in 1832. The bulk of the correspondence is personal, chiefly Sherman's letters to his wife Hester in New York City during his military service and his time in Albany as a State assemblyman and senator, mentioning his various activities. Correspondents include Cornelius S. Van Winkle, Congressman Silas Wright, Jr., Colonel Robert Bogardus, and other Sherman family members. less

John D. (John Darragh) Wilkins (died 1900) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was a U.S. Army infantry officer who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1846. He served in the Mexican War and the Civil War, retiring in 1886 with the rank of colonel. Wilkins was the son of Army officer John Holmes Wilkins and Mary Darragh. The collection contains nineteen letters written by John D. Wilkins to his mother Mrs. Mary Wilkins, describing in rich detail his life as a West Point cadet, from his plebe year to approaching graduation, 1842 August 7-1846 May 17. There are also two letters to his brother, H.B. (Hugh Brady) Wilkins, concerning a fire that destroyed their family home, 1845 April 24, and their career prospects, 1845 December 9. There are no letters for the year 1844; a letter dated 1842 February 25 was apparently written 1843 February 25. Classmates mentioned in passing include his friend and roommate George B. McClellan and Garland Whistler (Joseph N.G. Whistler). Letters also touch on news about family and friends, his mother’s financial concerns, and his brother Brady’s attendance at Yale College and his plans to work in the law. In addition the collection contains his undated manuscript, “Love of Country,” identified as a Fourth of July oration at San Elizario, Texas. less

Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. (1917-2007) was a Pulitzer Prize winning American historian and Robert F. Kennedy supporter and biographer. Addressing a private group in a Brooklyn Heights (New York City) home on October 5, 1964, Schlesinger delivered a speech in support of Robert F. Kennedy's candidacy to become a U.S. Senator. Schlesinger's intention was to present Kennedy as a liberal ally to skeptical New York City Democrats. In his speech, Schlesinger discussed the influence of Barry Goldwater's presidential candidacy on American politics; situated the carpetbagger accusations aimed at Kennedy in historical and constitutional context; and invoked Kennedy's role in the United States's response to the Cuban Missile Crisis as an example of his leadership ability.
