The Stephen Donaldson Papers document the varied career and tumultuous personal history of the writer and activist. The date span of the papers is 1965-1998. They include manuscripts, typescripts, and publication tearsheets of Donaldson's writings, editorial and administrative papers for the unpublishedConcise Encyclopedia of Homosexuality, personal and professional correspondence, news clippings and printed material, photographs, audiotapes and a few items of clothing and ephemera. The Stephen Donaldson Papers are an important resource for the study of gay and bisexual activism, prisoners and prison life and counter-cultural movements from the 1960s-90s. less

Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera. less

Karla Jay, author and historian, co-authored with Allen Young, free-lance writer, journalist and publisher, a comprehensive survey and documentary of gay and lesbian sexuality entitled THE GAY REPORT: LESBIANS AND GAY MEN SPEAK OUT ABOUT SEXUAL EXPERIENCES AND LIFESTYLES (New York, Summit Books, c. 1979). The papers consist of typescript drafts of the text of THE GAY REPORT arranged by chapter title; and original copies of the gay male section of the questionnaire returned by respondents. The lesbian section of the questionnaire can be found in the Karla Jay Papers (MssCol 1554). The typescript contains numerous editorial corrections and emendations. The questionnaires are arranged in serial order (4001-9,452). Many of them contain, in addition to the short answers in the hands of the respondents, additional marginal annotations; and several contain hand or typewritten narrative responses to the essay questions. There are also several samples of tabulations used in preparing the results of the survey. less

The David W. Dunlap Papers contain materials from the period of Dunlap's career in which he covered the gay, lesbian and AIDS beat for the New York Times. The collection consists of printed copies of Dunlap's articles and the research materials used to write them. Special materials include audio recordings of interviews and events, photographs from gay rights parades and business cards collected by Dunlap. less
