Horatio Gates (1728-1806) was a general in the American Revolutionary War. He commanded the American forces at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777 and in 1780 was placed in chief command of the army in the South. During the French and Indian War, he served as an officer in the British army. Collection consists of correspondence and orderly books of General Gates. Correspondence, 1787-1804, primarily from family and friends, concerns personal and financial matters but also relates to American politics. Letter book, 1780-1781, contains letters written by Gates during his command in the South during the Revolution. The Conewago Canal Company built the Conewago Canal on the Susquehanna River at Conewago Falls, Lancaster County, Penn. The company was founded in 1792 by a group of Pennsylvania investors with the support of the state legislature. The locks were officially opened in 1797 and the company was sold to its creditors in 1800. Collection consists of correspondence, minutes, business papers, and accounts of the Conewago Canal Company. Correspondence between the shareholders and officers of the company, including its first president, Robert Morris, relate to the financing, engineering, construction, and operation of the canal and its locks. After 1801 most of the correspondence is addressed to Thomas Willing Francis, merchant of Philadelphia, who assumed ownership of the canal properties, and concerns the construction and management of a flour mill, distillery and sawmill, and to marketing of produce in Baltimore. Also, correspondence concerning a plan to build a toll road to the canal from York, Penn., and opposition to the plan in the Pennsylvania legislature; and a plan to create the town of York Haven adjacent to the canal as a commercial center for river trade. Other items are minutes of meetings of the board of directors, 1792-1798; business papers, 1788-1812; and accounts, 1792-1815, including account books, monthly payroll acounts of laborers, and ledgers. less

Ecco Press was an independent small-trade publisher known for presenting distinguished new work in international poetry and fiction writing through its books and its journal Antaeus, and for reissuing neglected classics in a variety of fields, including travel and food writing. Daniel Halpern (b. 1945) started Antaeus in 1970 with the help of Paul Bowles. His search for financial backing for Antaeus led to the creation of Ecco Press in 1971 with co-founder and publisher Drue Heinz. Heinz retired in 1991, transferring ownership of Ecco Press to Halpern, its editor-in-chief. Ecco Press remained an independent firm, although affiliated with publishers Viking Press and W.W. Norton & Company for sales and distribution, until its acquisition by HarperCollins in 1999. The Ecco Press records contain correspondence, memoranda, administrative and financial records, typescripts, galleys, page proofs, bound books and periodicals, photographs, jacket art, posters, a sound recording and computer data storage that document the founding and day-to-day operations of the press. The records also reflect the personal life and career of Daniel Halpern as an editor, poet, teacher, anthologist, and prominent literary figure, as well as such literary activities as the National Poetry Series which Halpern ran out of the Ecco Press offices. Halpern's papers contain correspondence, diaries, notebooks, writings, subject files and academic, financial and real estate papers. less
