Parnassus: Poetry in Review, a journal devoted to long reviews of new books of poetry and in depth retrospective essays covering the careers of particular poets, was founded in 1972 by Herbert Leibowitz (Editor) and Stanley Lewis (Publisher). In 1975, Leibowitz purchased the magazine from Lewis and set up the non-profit Poetry in Review Foundation whose only function was to publish Parnassus. Leibowitz assumed the duties of publisher in addition to his duties as editor. The Parnassus: Poetry in Review Records (1971-1996) consist mostly of general and editorial correspondence and revised and corrected typescripts, authors' galleys, and page proofs of pieces which appeared in the magazine. The correspondence also traces editor Herbert Leibowitz's personal and professional relationships with many notable and aspiring writers, poets, critics, artists, and academics. Russell and Volkening is one of New York's oldest literary agencies, opened in 1940 by Diarmuid Russell and Henry Volkening. They represented some of the most noted writers in the history of American publishing, including Eudora Welty, Bernard Malamud, Anne Tyler, George Plimpton, Barbara Tuchman, Saul Bellow, Ann Petry, A. J. Liebling, and Nadine Gordimer. Included in the collection are business correspondence; financial material; inventories and submission records of manuscripts submitted to the agency and through the agency to publishers and others; some manuscripts; and other material regarding the business of the agency. Richard-Gabriel Rummonds (1931- ), is a noted hand-press printer and the founder, printer, and publisher of the Plain Wrapper Press and Ex Ophidia Press which published fine art limited editions of poetry and prose by contemporary authors. He has taught printing at the University of Alabama and Cornish College (Seattle) and is the author of the manual Printing on the Iron Handpress (1997), Nineteenth-Century Printing Practices and the Iron Handpress (2004), as well as numerous essays and lectures on the book arts. Collection consists of records of the Plain Wrapper Press and Rummonds' personal and professional papers 1948-2010. Correspondence with friends, relatives, business associates, and professional colleagues documents his careers as industrial and book designer, commercial attach? in Quito, Ecuador, and later, iron hand-press printer and founder of the Plain Wrapper Press and Ex Ophidia Press, writer and educator. Plain Wrapper Press records include correspondence, production files of manuscripts, proof-sheets and galleys; engravings and lino-cuts; samples of bindings, papers, covers, and completed books, keepsakes, and other examples of his printing. Regina Kellerman (1923-2009) was an architectural historian who served as an early director of research for the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission, and later become the founder and first director of the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation. Her pioneering research, both in New York and the Netherlands, led to her correctly identifying the location of New York City's first City Hall, a conclusion borne out by the subsequent excavation of the site during the early 1970s. The collection covers Kellerman's career as an architectural historian and preservationist and includes correspondence, reports and notes, architectural drawings and plans, and photographs and slides which she generated and gathered in the course of her investigation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods located in New York City and the surrounding area. less

Anne Marx was a poet, lecturer and editor. She was vice-president of the Poetry Society of America in 1978 and regional president of the National League of American Pen Women in 1992. She died April 16, 2006. The collection contains correspondence with friends and organizations, Poetry Society of America records, material about lectures and workshops, drafts of her poems and material pertaining to the nine volumes of published poetry. Arnie Kantrowitz is a writer, educator, and gay activist who was integrally involved in several gay activist groups in the 1970s and 1980s including the Gay Activists Alliance, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee. The Arnie Kantrowitz papers date from 1951 to 2008 and contain personal papers and organizational records chiefly reflecting Kantrowitz's activities as a writer, gay rights activist, and English professor. The collection consists of correspondence from friends, fellow writers, and readers; diaries and notebooks; records concerning his involvement in various gay rights organizations; files relating to his teaching career at the College of Staten Island; notes, drafts and manuscripts of his published and unpublished writing; sound and video recordings; and personal memorabilia. less

Jamake Highwater (born circa. 1930) was the director and choreographer for the San Francisco Contemporary Dancers from 1954 to 1967, and a rock music journalist and travel writer from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s. From 1975 on, he was been primarily a lecturer and an author of fiction and non-fiction, dealing mostly with American Indian arts and culture, and with myth and ritual in general. Based in New York from 1967 until the mid-1980s, Highwater moved to Los Angeles in 1992 and died in 2001.The papers include writings by Highwater in published and typescript form, correspondence, photographs, slides, audio tapes, and films and videos, mostly pertaining to Highwater's work in modern dance and as a writer and public speaker. less

Harriet Walden (1914-2006) was on the administrative staff of the New Yorker magazine for over forty years, from 1944 to 1985, and was E. B. and Katharine Sergeant Whites' secretary from 1956 to 1986. The Harriet Walden New Yorker papers contain correspondence, procedural documents, and printed materials that reflect her career at the New Yorker, as well as the friendships she developed with various New Yorker writers and editors. The bulk of the collection concerns Walden's role as secretary to the Whites. Other writers and editors represented in the papers include John Bainbridge, Geoffrey Hellman, Hendrik Hertzberg, Leo Hofeller, Mollie Panter-Downes, Harold Ross, William Shawn, and William Walden. less

The records of the Lavanburg Foundation contain meeting minutes and administrative files documenting the activities of the foundation, records of construction of the Lavanburg Villages, and files on grants awarded. Materials are organized in three series (Administrative Files, Lavanburg Villages Project, and Grants), and range in date from 1927 to 2011. The Fred L. Lavanburg Foundation was established in 1927 as a low-income, non-profit housing corporation for families with children who were unable to find housing elsewhere. The Lavanburg Homes were constructed in Manhattan in 1927, and in 1956, were donated to New York City. In the 1960s, the Lavanburg Foundation took on a second construction project, building the Lavanburg Villages in the Bronx. From 1927 to 2006, the Lavanburg Foundation also provided seed-money grants to organizations assisting in the foundation's mission of providing better housing and social support for low-income families. The Lavanburg Foundation closed in 2011. less

Joseph A. Sonnabend is a physician, laboratory scientist, clinical researcher, and community activist who contributed immeasurably to the fight against AIDS. As a pioneer in community-based research, he co-founded the AIDS Medical Foundation (later to become the American Foundation for AIDS Research, or amfAR) and the Community Research Initiative/Community Research Initiative on AIDS, as well as the PWA Health Group. In addition to creating community organizations, Dr. Sonnabend treated patients and conducted research into AIDS for the first twenty-three years of the epidemic in New York City, and helped create the first safe-sex guidelines. The Joseph A. Sonnabend Papers contain interviews, lectures, and press clippings; correspondence; published and near-print materials; legal case files and depositions; organizational records, clinical trial records, and grant applications and research proposals; scientific research, article drafts, charts, graphs, and notes; conference materials; and ephemera. Lore Segal is a New York based novelist and children's book author. A daughter of Austrian Jews, Segal escaped Nazi occupied Vienna on the first Kindertransport in 1939. This collection contains letters and documents of her family in Austria and England during World War II, and their emigration to the Dominican Republic and the United States; letters to Segal from throughout her life; letters from Segal as a young girl and documenting her time at Yaddo; and literary manuscripts documenting her novels, children's books, short stories and other writings.
