Scope and arrangement
This is a synthetic collection consisting of manuscripts, correspondence, a journal entry for March 2, 1840, portraits, and pictorial works. The manuscripts include poems and portions of poems, essays, and notes for works by the author, as well as poems relating to the author by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, Richard Henry Stoddard, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. The correspondence consists of letters from the author, dating from 1826 to 1882, to William S. Appleton, Sarah Perkins Cleveland, Ferdinand Freiligrath, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Washington Irving, James R. Osgood, William W. F. Synge, R. S. Voorhis, Walt Whitman, and others, as well as letters relating to the author, dating from [1856?] to 1901, between various correspondents, including Eliza Callahan Cleveland, James T. Fields, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Anne Sophia Longfellow, Samuel Longfellow, and others. There are letters to Longfellow from Louis Agassiz, Henry Russell Cleveland, Cornelius Conway Felton, Bayard Taylor, and John Greenleaf Whittier, dating from 1836 to1873.
