Records of the first Director of The New York Public Library. John Shaw Billings (1838-1913) served as Director of NYPL from its founding in 1895 until 1913. He helped create NYPL by combining the Astor and Lenox Libraries into a public research library and building a branch library system for three of the boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx.) He also planned and oversaw the construction of the NYPL Central Building which was opened to the public in 1911. less

The Tompkins Square Branch traces its origins to the Fifth Street Branch of the Aguilar Free Library, which opened in 1887 at 624 Fifth Street on Manhattan's lower east side. The branch moved several times prior to the 1903 merger of the Aguilar Free Library with NYPL. In 1904 it opened in a new building at 331 East 10th Street, facing Tompkins Square Park. The building was designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, and was constructed with funds provided by Andrew Carnegie. Traditionally, Tompkins Square has served varied ethnic populations, including German, Italian, Jewish, Polish, and Ukrainian, and, since the 1960s, a thriving arts community. A major renovation of the branch was completed in 1996. NYPL Archives Record Group 4 consists of the records of the various independent circulating libraries that consolidated with The New York Public Library, Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foundations. These records cover the period prior to each library's consolidation with NYPL. The majority of the records in this collection are for the New York Free Circulating Library, the Aguilar Free Library and the Webster Free Library. There are also a few items from Cathedral, Harlem, Maimonides, New York Free Circulating Library for the Blind, and Tottenville Libraries. less
