The Equity Library Theatre (ELT) was a theatre company in New York City from 1943 to 1989, founded by actor Sam Jaffe, a representative of the Actor's Equity Association, and George Freedley, curator of the Theatre Collection of the New York Public Library. ELT was dedicated to showcasing unemployed Equity actors in classic and modern plays and musicals and to provide free theatre to New Yorkers. Paula Silberstein was a founding member of Saturday Theatre for Children, a program that was established in 1960 to encourage the development of theater productions for children. She was also a cultural resources specialist for the New York City Board of Education's Bureau of Audio-Visual Instruction, a position she retired from in 1975. The Paula Silberstein papers (1931-1986) contain a large amount of personal correspondence, a small amount of which touches on topics related to children's theater and the Bureau of Audio-Visual Instruction. Other subjects of the correspondence including visiting Israel and Silberstein's theater work with the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue. The collection contains a small number of records from Saturday Theatre for Children, dating from 1985 to 1986. These include budget information, fundraising information, executive board meeting minutes, and announcements about programs. The Radio Writers Guild Records consist of correspondence, contracts and minutes for the years 1930 to 1958. The materials regarding the RWG is limited to the Guild as a national organization and to the activities of the Eastern Region. While there are some contracts between the Western Region and their local radio stations, there is little correspondence within the Western Region and almost none within the Mid Region. The membership records of the Western and Mid Regions, in this collection, only reflect transfers of Mid Region and Western Region members to and from the Eastern Region. less
