The New York Shakespeare Festival records (1954-1992) measure approximately 850 linear feet and consist of scripts, correspondence, inter-office memoranda, production materials, reports, financial records, photographs, and memorabilia. The records reflect the origin and activities of the New York Shakespeare Festival, its general administration, and the staging of its productions, including their creation, management, booking, and promotion. The files of the Casting Office, except in the form of carbon copies in other series, are not included in this archive. There are also gaps in the files of the Associate Producer. Contracts were removed and require special permission of the curator to access. Oral history materials in Series I and some correspondence in Series V are restricted until the year 2043 in order to protect the privacy of individual persons. Series XIV (Oversized Materials) is not fully processed and is currently unavailable for research.

The George Stoddard papers contain correspondence, memoranda, and meeting minutes documenting the governance of Lincoln Center during its first decades, the work of the programming and education committees of Lincoln Center, and administration of the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center. Internationally acclaimed performing arts photographer Martha Swope was born in Waco, Texas and is a graduate of Baylor University. She came to New York to attend the School of American Ballet. Swope's career as the performance photographer of record began when her classmate, Jerome Robbins, asked her to photograph rehearsals of the show on which he was working, West Side story, in 1957. Although self-taught, for almost four decades (ca. 1957-ca. 1994), she created iconic images of theater and dance that communicated the essence and artistry of the performer and the work. Swope lives in New York City. The collection consists of over 1,520,000 images, black and white and color, on contact sheets with corresponding negatives (mostly 35 mm and 120), transparencies, slides, and prints taken by Martha Swope from ca. 1955-2002 (bulk dates 1957-1994). There are also some programs and clippings filed with the images, often illustrating where the image was published or used. It documents Swope's career photographing theater productions, dance companies, such as American Ballet Theatre, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Martha Graham Dance Company, and New York City Ballet, opera productions, music groups, circus, film, television, individual performers, and performing arts-related personalities.

She was also a cultural resources specialist for the New York City Board of Education's Bureau of Audio-Visual Instruction, a position she retired from in 1975. The Paula Silberstein papers (1931-1986) contain a large amount of personal correspondence, a small amount of which touches on topics related to children's theater and the Bureau of Audio-Visual Instruction. Other subjects of the correspondence including visiting Israel and Silberstein's theater work with the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue. The collection contains a small number of records from Saturday Theatre for Children, dating from 1985 to 1986. These include budget information, fundraising information, executive board meeting minutes, and announcements about programs. Nat Karson, producer and designer of costumes, sets, and lighting in theatrical and television productions in New York, was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1908, and moved to Chicago at an early age. He moved to New York in 1929, and worked in theatre productions at the Federal Theatre Project, including the all-black-cast production of Macbeth (1936), directed by Orson Welles. Karson also produced and created set, costume and lighting designs for theatrical productions on Broadway and elsewhere, such as the 1939 New York World's Fair. He served as the art director of Radio City Music Hall (1936-1943), and in 1948 he became consultant producer at the Columbia Broadcasting Company. His credits include The Hot Mikado (1939), Keep off the grass (1940), and Hamlet at the Kronberg Festival in Denmark (1949). Nat Karson died in New York City in 1954. Originals and copies of color costume and set designs; sketches and costume plots; technical drawings; and storyboards by Nat Karson for theatrical and television productions in New York during 1931-1949. The collection also includes 2 sketchbooks of set designs, several cut-outs of stage models, 1 caricature, 2 posters, and some black & white photographs.

The Actor's Workshop and Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center records contain the administrative and production records of the two companies, and document the creative output and operational activities of directors Jules Irving and Herbert Blau, and manager Alan Mandell. The Actor's Workshop was a San Francisco-based professional theater company, founded by Jules Irving and Herbert Blau that presented experimental and classic productions from 1952 to 1966. In 1965, Irving and Blau became the artistic directors for The Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center, a fledgling theater company with the goal of presenting plays of social and emotional significance in a repertory format. Longtime collaborator and theater manager Alan Mandell accompanied Blau and Irving to the Repertory Theatre.
