The founders maintained that people living with AIDS could lead productive and self-fulfilling lives when they practiced a philosophy of self-empowerment and self-reliance.

The AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) was founded in March 1987 at the Lesbian and Gay Community Center in New York City's Greenwich Village as an organization devoted to direct action (demonstrations and civil disobedience) to call the attention of government officials, scientists, drug companies and other corporations, and the general public to the severity of the AIDS crisis and its impact on the lives of individuals. Records of the organization consist of administrative files, minutes, correspondence, records of demonstrations, financial documents, chapter and committee records, subject files, conference notes and programs, published and near-print materials, ephemera, fliers and handbills, photographs, artifacts, posters and placards documenting the organization's efforts.

Gran Fury was an artists' collective devoted to AIDS activism through agitprop art. Named after the Plymouth automobile favored by the New York City police department, Gran Fury drew its membership from the ranks of ACT UP/NY (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, New York).The collection contains examples of Gran Fury's works in the form of posters, stickers, fliers, printed ads, billboards and bus signs, as well as photograph and slide reproductions. Included also are a small amount of correspondence, textual accompaniments for artwork, copies of publications in which Gran Fury's works appeared, a sound recording of a Gran Fury press conference, and a videotaped interview with group members.

Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera.

The New York Foundation is a philanthropic foundation, established in New York City in 1909 for the purpose of providing financial support towards "altruistic purposes, charitable, benevolent, educational, or otherwise." For over a century, the Foundation has awarded grants to charitable and non-profit organizations in numerous fields, including public health, workers' rights, literacy, child welfare, AIDS research and treatment, women's suffrage, racial equity, legal aid, the alleviation of poverty, civil rights, immigrants' rights, and education reform, among many others. Although some earlier grants supported programs in other areas of the country, the bulk of the Foundation's grants since 1975 have been awarded to organizations in New York City, with a focus on grassroots community organizations.

The Aaron Diamond Foundation was a philanthropic foundation in New York City established by Mr. and Mrs. Aaron Diamond for the purpose of serving the public interest. From 1986 until its termination in 1996 the Foundation awarded financial grants to a broad range of charitable and non-profit organizations in various fields including education, bio-medical research, public health, social welfare, human rights, and the performing arts. Most of the grantee organizations were located in New York City. The bulk of the collection consists of grant files arranged alphabetically by year which record the awarding and administration of financial grants to charitable and non-profit organizations in the fields of medical research, education and culture mainly in New York City who appealed to the Foundation for funds for general support or for special projects and programs. The files include correspondence of the executive director with grantee organizations; copies of proposals and other documents including annual reports, auditors' reports, newsletters and miscellaneous printed matter submitted by grantees in support of their requests for funds; and documents relating to the administration of the grants including grant agreement letters, interim and final reports, internal memoranda, grant data worksheets, and other records. Included also are minutes of the Foundation's board of directors; and miscellaneous records including a chronological file of grant agreement letters sent; and a file of correspondence of the executive director acknowledging and rejecting requests for financial aid.

The American Educational Theatre Association, was formed in 1936 by a group of drama teachers to encourage high standards of teaching, production and scholarship; to disseminate information concerning developments in the theatre; and to initiate and support national legislation. Membership was composed of teachers, actors, students, directors, and other people involved in educational theatre. Known later as the American Theatre Association, the organization developed and published materials for use in childrens, school, college and university, and community theatres; promoted touring theatre groups; and stimulated creative activity and scholarship in educational theatre and allied fields. Records of the Association consist of correspondence, reports, minutes, directories, application forms, and printed matter with some materials of other organizations involved with the ATA. Presidential papers, 1949-1956, cover the administrations of Hubert Heffner, Monroe Lippman, Lee Mitchell, William P. Halstead, Barnard Hewitt, Horace Robinson, and Frank Whitney. The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Periodical Collection was initially composed of periodicals collected by the International Gay Information Center (IGIC) and donated to the New York Public Library in 1988. In subsequent years, additional titles were added to the collection. Most notably, periodicals from the Barbara Gittings and Kay Tobin Lahusen Collection were added. While this additional material expanded the holdings of titles already represented in the collection, new titles were also acquired. Most of the periodicals can be requested in the Manuscripts and Archives Division. Titles followed by a call number (e.g., *ZAN-1234) should be requested from the Microforms Division, Room 100. There are also many GLBT periodicals held by other units of the New York Public Library. Most of these can be found in the online catalog.

Parnassus: Poetry in Review, a journal devoted to long reviews of new books of poetry and in depth retrospective essays covering the careers of particular poets, was founded in 1972 by Herbert Leibowitz (Editor) and Stanley Lewis (Publisher). In 1975, Leibowitz purchased the magazine from Lewis and set up the non-profit Poetry in Review Foundation whose only function was to publish Parnassus. Leibowitz assumed the duties of publisher in addition to his duties as editor. The Parnassus: Poetry in Review Records (1971-1996) consist mostly of general and editorial correspondence and revised and corrected typescripts, authors' galleys, and page proofs of pieces which appeared in the magazine. The correspondence also traces editor Herbert Leibowitz's personal and professional relationships with many notable and aspiring writers, poets, critics, artists, and academics. The records include additional editorial files, such as interoffice communications and readers' reports, typescripts of rejected or otherwise unpublished submissions to the magazine, art and photographs, administrative and financial files, sound recordings and electronic media.
