The Gates and Morange Studio was founded by Frank E. Gates and Edward A. Morange and was located in New York City. Gates was born in Chicago and Morange was born in Bronxville, New York. Both men studied at the School of Fine Arts in St. Louis, Missouri. Although Gates and Morange had worked together since 1894, the partnership's first Broadway credit was Straight from the heart by Sutton Vane and Arthur Shirley (1897). The studio designed scenery for more than 50 productions over four decades, additionally painting and supplying countless others. Clients included Liebler Co., Florenz Ziegfeld and George C. Tyler. Designers included Thomas Benrimo, William E. Castle, Richard Gates (brother of Frank), Charles Graham, Alexander Grainger, Arne Lundborg, Orestes Raineiri, and Edward Morange. Edward Morange died on May 20, 1955 in Torrington, Connecticut after a long illness at the age of 90. Original set designs, curtain designs, drops, and olio designs, mostly color, produced by the Gates and Morange studio over four decades for theatrical productions and for businesses, trade shows, and several exhibitions. Although most of the designs are undated, the bulk of the collection appears to date from the 1920s. Among the more than 75 productions included are The daughter of heaven by Pierre Loti (ca. 1912); Dolce Napoli (ca. 1913); Earl Carroll vanities (1923); For valor by Martha Hedman and H.A. Born in Kazan, Russia in 1900, Gard emigrated to the United States in 1924. Perhaps Gard's most famous works are his caricatures of Broadway celebrities for the walls of Sardi's restaurant, for which he was paid in meals. His drawings also appeared in The New York Herald Tribune's drama section. Gard died in New York City en route to the hospital in 1948. Mostly black and white original caricatures of theatrical productions, actors, actresses, and notables, but also includes a few motion picture celebrities and other subjects, by Alex Gard. The caricatures consist of both finished ink drawings, as well as a large number of preliminary sketches in pencil. Some drawings depict several personalities or productions in one. A few of the dozens of celebrities portrayed include Eddie Cantor, Katharine Hepburn, Bert Lahr, Ethel Merman, and Victor Moore. There are also several sketchbooks and cartoons, a number of which depict casinos, bars, and various scenes in the state of Nevada. Of note are 3 caricatures of New York theater critics, portayed as Eskimos, a marching band, and in judicial robes and wigs. less

The collection contains portraits in photographs, drawings and reproductions of drawings of individuals involved in the entertainment arts. The portraits were created by G. Maillard Kesslère from 1925 through 1952, with the bulk of them amassed from 1925 to about 1946. The subjects include actors, dancers, singers, musicians, composers, conductors, critics, writers, directors, producers, and designers for the theater, dance, ballet, opera, radio, and television. The largest group in the collection consists of approximately 858 portraits in half-length, bust, or head only formats, and includes 589 black and white photographs, approximately 30 original pastel or charcoal drawings, and some 239 black and white photomechanical reproductions of original drawings. Over 500 of the subjects in this group are identified. The collection also includes a series of black and white photos of male and female subjects who are largely unidentified, but who were likely active in society, business, or the performing arts. Volume containing lyrics to twenty songs, two of which, "Nevermo'" and "The Lee Family" were recorded by Williams on Columbia Records in 1915 and 1916 respectively. Second volume, entilted "Anecdotes, Jokes, Axioms, Proverbs, Funs and Puns..." contains over two hundred jokes or "lies" told by Williams and written down by Alex Rogers, a member of Williams' company. These dialectic stories, all of which contain a flavor of fable and black folklore, are primarily about rural or unsophisticated characters. They were first used by Williams in 1909 when he experimented in vaudeville as a solo performer, and later while Williams was a member of the Ziegfeld Follies. less

Walter J. Kingsley was an American press agent and journalist. He reported for the New York Telegraph and for the London Daily Express before beginning his career as a press agent in the 1900s. From the 1910s until 1928, Kingsley was the general press representative for United Booking Offices and B.F. Keith theaters in New York. In 1928, he became press representative for Florenz Ziegfeld. The Walter J. Kingsley papers date from 1899 to 1935 and contains clippings, correspondence, and photographs and caricatures of Kingsley. Most of the material is mounted in scrapbooks, but some is loose. The first scrapbook in the collection documents Kingsley's early work as a journalist, notably his reporting on Alberto Santos-Dumont's dirigible flights in 1901. The scrapbook also documents a hoax that Kingsley orchestrated that same year, in which he convinced many American newspapers that a British syndicate had wagered $150,000 against a Pittsburgh syndicate over the outcome of a yacht race. Scrapbooks dating from the 1910s to the 1920s contain Kingsley's articles on the Keith-Albee vaudeville circuit and other entertainment topics, as well as his writings on being a publicist and his published poems (often on entertainment topics). Kingsley's name appeared frequently in newspapers, and the scrapbooks contain many articles about his activities, including theater-related anecdotes and his involvement in the Manhattan Cheese Club in the 1920s. Materials dating after Kingsley's death in 1929 include letters to his widow, Francesca Carmen, poems by his daughter Gloria Kathleen Kingsley, and a comedy sketch by his daughter from his first marriage, screenwriter Dorothy Kingsley. The collection includes a manuscript of an unpublished biography of Kingsley by Edward Morley Barrows. The biography spans Kingsley's whole career, including his time covering the Russo-Japanese War for the Daily Mail under the pen name "Stephen England," and his work as a war correspondent during the Boer War. The collection also contains poems signed by Edwin Markham, a letter sent to the Daily Express in 1900 by a representative of Markham's, and a biographical pamphlet about Markham. less
