Scope and arrangement
The records of the Tilden Trust mainly document the legal challenges to the will of Samuel J. Tilden from 1887 to 1892, and the disposition of the Tilden Estate in the 1890s. There are few records for the period after 1900. The papers include materials relating to the consolidation of the Tilden Trust and the Astor and Lenox libraries, and the early development of the New York Public Library. There are also a few items that document the political career of Samuel J. Tilden. The records consist of architectural drawings, correspondence, inventories, legal documents, memoranda, newsclippings, notes, property maps, publications, and statistical tables.
The Tilden Trust records are arranged in four series:
- 1878-18946 folders
- 1894-19063 folders
- 1886-189911 folders
