Alpheus Sherman (1779 or 1780-1866) was a New York City lawyer, judge, and politician. During the War of 1812 he served as a captain in the 41st U.S. Infantry Regiment under the command of Colonel Robert Bogardus, stationed at Sandy Hook, New Jersey and in Brooklyn, New York. The Alpheus Sherman papers, 1804-circa 1844, consist of a numbered series of correspondence and documents, including letters dating from his service in the War of 1812 during the years 1813-1815, and unnumbered documents pertaining to veterans' claims for military bounty lands, 1815-1817, with a printed speech given by Sherman in 1832. The bulk of the correspondence is personal, chiefly Sherman's letters to his wife Hester in New York City during his military service and his time in Albany as a State assemblyman and senator, mentioning his various activities. Correspondents include Cornelius S. Van Winkle, Congressman Silas Wright, Jr., Colonel Robert Bogardus, and other Sherman family members. less

The Lesbian and Gay History: Defining a Field conference records (1994-1995) reflect the planning of and interest in this groundbreaking conference held at the City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center on October 6-7, 1995. The conference, sponsored by the Ph.D. program in history at the CUNY Graduate Center and the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS), brought together scholars from across the United States to discuss and disseminate ideas pertaining to the research, teaching, and documentation of the history of the LGBTQ community. The conference included graduate student panels and sessions focused on archives, sources, and methodology and teaching lesbian and gay history. The records reflect the work of the conference organizers, specifically David Nasaw, chair of the CUNY Graduate Center history program and graduate student Tracy Morgan, and indicate the involvement of prominent scholars and activists. Abram S. Hewitt (1822-1903) was a New York lawyer, politician, and iron manufacturer. These three letters were written in 1849 by Hewitt to industrialist Peter Cooper, while Hewitt was in Philadelphia; Bordentown, New Jersey; and Sandusky, Ohio. In these brief communications, Hewitt mentions coal and nail supplies (presumably for their Trenton Iron Company) and refers to the lack of cholera in Sandusky during the 1849 cholera epidemic. less

Louis D. Carman (1860-1936) was a medical examiner in the United States Bureau of Pensions and a collector of Lincolniana. His father, Ezra Ayer Carman, was a Civil War officer. The Louis D. Carman collection dates from 1828 to 1923 and consists of items accumulated by Louis D. Carman, specifically correspondence and autographs; a friendship album containing poetry; and handwritten excerpts transcribed from books about fishing. A variety of documents bear the signatures of politicians and federal government officials; military generals; and businessmen. Simon Gratz (1840-1925) was an American lawyer and philanthropist of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Simon Gratz collection of letters of prominent American physicians and surgeons comprises sixty autograph items, chiefly letters. Each name is represented by one item; an additional autograph item written by Samuel Bard is not found. Prominent letter writers include Jacob Bigelow, Silvester Gardiner, David Hosack, and Samuel L. Mitchill. Recipients are chiefly persons in the medical field, but clergymen, scientists and other professions are also represented. Among them are James H. Armsby, Amos Eaton, Jedidiah Morse, and William H. Seward. Autograph items include several death certificates, and part of a medical work by Edward Miller (1760-1812). less

Robert Stone was an award-winning American novelist and screen writer. His works include A Hall of Mirrors, Dog Soldiers, A Flag for Sunrise, Children of Light, and Outerbridge Reach. The Robert Stone papers date from 1950 to 2013, and consist of notes, typescript drafts (on paper and computer disk), galleys, and proof pages for all of Stone's novels; shorter pieces and excerpts from the novels in draft, galley, and published form; reviews and publicity material; and general correspondence. Typescript drafts of Stone's novels comprise the bulk of the papers and reflect his method of composition. Later drafts, galleys, and proofs document the books' progress up to the point of publication. Most of the correspondence are letters received by Stone and document his career as a novelist. less

The Carnegie Corporation was founded in 1911 by Andrew Carnegie to continue his philanthropic work after his death. In 1901 Carnegie offered the City of New York 5.2 million dollars to establish a branch library system. The collection consists of correspondence that chronicles the creation of these circulating libraries. The bulk of the letters dated 1901-1912 were sent to Andrew Carnegie by John Shaw Billings, Director of the New York Public Library. The correspondence discusses the Carnegie gift, cost estimates and specific sites for branches, library needs, and plans to finance ongoing library operations. Other correspondence pertains to branch libraries in Brooklyn and Queens including letters relating to the proposed merger of the Brooklyn Library and the Brooklyn Public Library. less

Artist and gay rights activist Copy Berg was born Vernon E. Berg, III on July 10, 1951. He attended the United States Naval Academy from 1970-1974 and then served with the U. S. Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. In 1975 the Navy sought to release him by General Discharge on grounds of homosexuality. Berg fought a highly publicized legal battle against the Navy but lost the case and was released in 1976. He settled in New York where he studied at Pratt Institute and launched his career as an artist. In 1986 Berg was diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the cause of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). His subsequent artwork explored the social response to the AIDS epidemic, sexual politics and sadomasochism. Berg died of an AIDS-related illness on January 27, 1999. The Copy Berg Papers include correspondence of the artist, his friends and his family; records of Berg's service in the United States Navy and his discharge dispute; artwork; photographs; audio and video recordings; printed material and ephemera. less

The Hemingway legal files collection contains the records of Hemingway's lawyers, Maurice J. Speiser (1929-1948) and Alfred Rice (1947-1969). The papers include letters, contracts, and documents concerning foreign and domestic licensing of Hemingway's work for stage, ballet, radio, film, and television; litigation concerning the use of his writings and libel cases; and the management of Hemingway's estate (both property and literary) before and after his death. The records of the Lavanburg Foundation contain meeting minutes and administrative files documenting the activities of the foundation, records of construction of the Lavanburg Villages, and files on grants awarded. Materials are organized in three series (Administrative Files, Lavanburg Villages Project, and Grants), and range in date from 1927 to 2011. The Fred L. Lavanburg Foundation was established in 1927 as a low-income, non-profit housing corporation for families with children who were unable to find housing elsewhere. The Lavanburg Homes were constructed in Manhattan in 1927, and in 1956, were donated to New York City. In the 1960s, the Lavanburg Foundation took on a second construction project, building the Lavanburg Villages in the Bronx. From 1927 to 2006, the Lavanburg Foundation also provided seed-money grants to organizations assisting in the foundation's mission of providing better housing and social support for low-income families.
