Gabriel Banat is an American violinist who played for many years with the New York Philarmonic. He was born in Transylvania, Romania in 1926, eventually moving to Hungary. At the age of eight, he was discovered by Béla Bartók, who enabled him to be accepted at the Royal Academy in Budapest (now the Franz Liszt Academy of Music), where he won honors. In 1946 he moved to New York City where he toured with Georges Enesco, his mentor. He became a naturalized citizen in 1953. He toured in the United States, Europe and Japan, and was guest soloist with the London Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, among others. In 1970 he joined the New York Philharmonic. He was a professor at Smith College where he led the violin department. He also conducted various ensembles and organizations during his career. His research on Mozart led to publication in facsimile of Mozart's five violin concertos (Raven Press, 1986). His research on the Chevalier de Saint-Georges led to a biography (Pendragon Press, 2006) as well as numerous articles. He also edited the series "Masters of the Violin" (1981-1982). Annie Proulx is a novelist, short fiction writer, historian, and essayist. She was born in Norwich, Connecticut, in 1935, to Lois Nellie Gill Proulx, a painter and amateur naturalist, and George N. Proulx, the vice-president of a textile mill. Her first collection of short fiction, Heart Songs and Other Stories, was published in 1988. In 1990, she completed her debut novel, Postcards, for which she won the 1993 PEN / Faulkner Award for Fiction. Her second novel, The Shipping News, won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Irish Times International Fiction Prize, and the Heartland Award for Fiction. Accordion Crimes, her third novel, was published in 1996. In 1997, she was awarded the Dos Passos Prize for Literature. In 1998, her story “Brokeback Mountain” won the National Magazine Award, The New Yorker Award for fiction, and the O. Henry Prize. It was adapted, in 2005, for a Paramount Pictures film by Larry McMurtry and Dianna Ossana, and was directed by Ang Lee. Her second collection of short fiction, Close Range: Wyoming Stories, was published in 1999; the lead story, “The Half-Skinned Steer,” was selected by John Updike for the Best American Stories of the Century (1999). In 2000, Proulx’s short story collection Close Range: Wyoming Stories won The New Yorker Award for fiction. Her fourth novel, That Old Ace in the Hole, was published in 2002. The Arnie Kantrowitz papers date from 1951 to 2008 and contain personal papers and organizational records chiefly reflecting Kantrowitz's activities as a writer, gay rights activist, and English professor. The collection consists of correspondence from friends, fellow writers, and readers; diaries and notebooks; records concerning his involvement in various gay rights organizations; files relating to his teaching career at the College of Staten Island; notes, drafts and manuscripts of his published and unpublished writing; sound and video recordings; and personal memorabilia. less

He studied in Los Angeles with Ernst Toch, at the Eastman School of Music with Bernard Rogers, and at Tanglewood with Aaron Copland. Avshalomov spent the majority of his career as the director of the Portland Youth Orchestra from 1954 to 1995. The Scores contains various drafts and sketches and scores composed by Jacob Avshalomov from 1928-1998. The bulk of the material dates from 1940-1998, and in addition to the scores, the collection contains correspondence, libretti and programs. Materials are organized in three series (Administrative Files, Lavanburg Villages Project, and Grants), and range in date from 1927 to 2011. The Fred L. Lavanburg Foundation was established in 1927 as a low-income, non-profit housing corporation for families with children who were unable to find housing elsewhere. The Lavanburg Homes were constructed in Manhattan in 1927, and in 1956, were donated to New York City. In the 1960s, the Lavanburg Foundation took on a second construction project, building the Lavanburg Villages in the Bronx. From 1927 to 2006, the Lavanburg Foundation also provided seed-money grants to organizations assisting in the foundation's mission of providing better housing and social support for low-income families. The Lavanburg Foundation closed in 2011. less
