Alexander Jackson Davis (1803-1892), the American architect, started working as a draftsman for Josiah C. Brady and Ithiel Town in New York City. He became Town's partner in 1829 and they collaborated on public structures, including the New York Customs House (1832) and various state capitols. When Davis went into business on his own, he continued to design public buildings but concentrated on designs for large country and suburban houses. Collection consists of the papers of Alexander Jackson Davis and his son Joseph Beale Davis. A.J. Davis papers contain correspondence, accounts, legal papers, lectures, writings, architectural specifications, drawings and engravings, diary, scrapbooks, catalog of his library, and miscellaneous materials. Bulk of the correspondence consists of letters, 1829-1890, to Davis concerning architectural projects and other business and personal matters. Writings and notes of Davis include diary, 1827-1853, and lectures with related materials. Scrapbooks contain engravings and woodcuts from books, drawings and watercolors of architectural details by Davis, and clippings. James Oppenheim (1882-1932), an American poet, novelist and editor, was a member of the bohemian circle of poets, artists and intellectuals that flourished in Greenwich Village, New York, during the 1910s. He began his career writing short stories and poetry for popular magazines and established himself as one of the leading younger poets with the publication of his verse collection Songs for the New Age (1914). In 1916 he founded the literary magazine The Seven Arts with Waldo Frank and Paul Rosenfeld; the magazine folded the next year because of the editorial policy attacking U.S. participation in World War I. Oppenheim became an adherent of psychoanalysis, in particular the theories of Carl Jung, and devoted most of his later poetic work to psychoanalytic investigations. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, editorial materials, financial and legal papers, drawings, photographs, and ephemera documenting Oppenheim's literary career and personal life. Correspondence, 1899-1932, with family friends and literary associates concerns literary, personal and business matters. Philip John Schuyler (1733-1804), a Revolutionary War general and statesman, was a prominent member of the landed aristocracy of New York State. The collection consists of correspondence, accounts, military records, land records, and other papers documenting Schuyler's military, political and business activities and, to a lesser extent, his family affairs. Correspondence, 1761-1804, is with military officers, members of the Continental Congress, committees of safety, and family, and concerns the conduct of the Revolutionary War in the Northern Department, 1775-1777, and political and personal matters. Indian papers, 1710-1797, contain Schuyler's papers as Commissioner of Indian Affairs in the Northern Department during the war and as agent of New York State. Canal papers, 1792-1803, include correspondence, diaries, reports, surveys, accounts, and other papers relating to the construction of canals in New York. His papers as Surveyor General of New York State, 1773-1788, and other public papers, circa 1775-1796, consist of correspondence, receipts, drafts of legislation and proposals, building plans, and other papers. Financial papers, 1711-1805, estate papers, 1752-1828, and land papers, 1705-1864, pertain to business activities and land holdings of Schuyler and family. Ernst Papanek (1900-1973) was an Austrian-born child psychologist and educator known for his work with refugee children during and after World War II and for his involvement in socialist parties in Europe and the United States. Collection consists of Papanek's correspondence, writings, diaries, photographs, sound recordings, and other materials, most of which relate to his work with children's homes in Europe and the U.S. General correspondence concerns juvenile delinquency; refugee children of World War II; and Papanek's directorships of American Youth for World Service, 1945-1951, Child Projects of the Unitarian Service Committee, 1946-1947, Brooklyn Training School for Girls, 1948-1949, and the Wiltwyck School for Boys, Esopus, N.Y., 1949-1958. His papers consist of correspondence, diaries, writings, and other papers relating to his career as editor of the New York Evening Post, as inspector of prisons in New York State, as United States Consul and Chargé d'Affaires at Paris, France, as Minister to the Court of Napoleon III, as United States Commissioner to the Brussels International Exhibition (1888), and as friend and advisor to Philippe Bunau-Varilla on the selection of the Panama route and the construction of the Panama Canal. Includes correspondence and documents relating to prison reform in New York State, the construction in France and England of warships for the Confederate Navy, the movement of Confederate ships in European waters, Confederate activities in Europe, the establishment at the Académie française of the Botta Prize, and the fitness of John C. William Smith Jr. (1728-1793), an American Loyalist of New York and Quebec, was a prominent jurist, statesman, journalist and historian. The William Smith Jr. papers comprise the papers of William Smith Jr., 1683-1793; those of his son William Smith III (1769-1847), a Canadian government official, historian and militia officer, 1797-1848; and Smith family land and estate papers, 1665-1912. The bulk of the collection consists of William Smith Jr.'s papers pertaining to his activities as a lawyer, journalist and historian, and as a Councillor and Chief Justice in the British provinces of New York and Quebec (later Lower Canada). Papers include his correspondence and documents, writings for publication, and the diaries he kept from 1753 to 1783, known as his Historical Memoirs. William Henry Jackson was an American photographer, artist and writer best known for his landscapes of the American West. He acted as photographer for the U.S. Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories in 1870-1879, producing some of the earliest photographs of Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming wilderness areas. The collection consists of diaries, letters, photographs, sketchbooks, notebooks, and ephemera. Jackson's diaries, diary transcripts and narratives cover his years as a Union soldier, 1862-1863; his travels through Nebraska, Utah, and California, 1866-1867; his years as a photographer in Omaha and as a photographer with the U.S. Geological Surveys, 1870-1878; his world tour with the World's Transportation Commission, 1894-1896; a short period of his work for the Detroit Publishing Company and his later years as an independent photographer and painter, 1925-1942. Elizabeth Oakes Prince Smith (1806-1893) was an author, lyceum lecturer and early activist on behalf of women's rights. Her writings included novels, poetry, children's books, plays, essays, stories, and articles for newspapers and magazines. She was active in the women's rights movement and in 1848 attended the Women's Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, N.Y. She was one of the first female lecturers on the lyceum circuit. Her husband, Seba Smith, was a newspaper editor and writer. Collection consists of Smith's writings, correspondence, drawings, and printed matter providing information on her literary career and her activities as a lyceum lecturer and early women's rights advocate. Writings include manuscripts of Smith's autobiography; manuscripts and clippings of her articles, lectures, poems, stories, plays, dime novels, and other writings. Among her writings are reminiscences of Ralph Waldo Emerson and several chapters of an unfinished biography of George Washington. Also, a small quantity of correspondence of Smith and her children, materials concerning spiritualism and psychometry, and several drawings and a photograph. less
