Ida May Mellen (1877-1970) was an aquarist at the New York Aquarium, 1916-1929. She wrote books and articles in the fields of marine biology and felinology. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, family and personal papers, photographs, and printed matter. Includes personal letters, 1903-1959; correspondence, 1907-1960, with editors, publishers and others relating to Mellen's writings and professional interests; correspondence, 1925-1958, concerning cats; original manuscripts and typescripts of her major unpublished writings; typescripts of poems, lectures and radio talks; and genealogical papers including her study of Mellen family ancestry in America. Angna Enters was a dancer and mime, a painter and writer. She developed nearly 300 separate characters for her touring Theater of Angna Enters from 1928-1960. She was a well-known artist and sculptor. Enters designed and executed all the costumes and props for her performances, and she illustrated several of the books she wrote on her life and work.She died in 1989. less

The collection contains correspondence, writings, family records, photographs, printed matter, memorabilia, and other papers of three generations of the Emerson family. His papers consist of correspondence, diaries, writings, and other papers relating to his career as editor of the New York Evening Post, as inspector of prisons in New York State, as United States Consul and Chargé d'Affaires at Paris, France, as Minister to the Court of Napoleon III, as United States Commissioner to the Brussels International Exhibition (1888), and as friend and advisor to Philippe Bunau-Varilla on the selection of the Panama route and the construction of the Panama Canal. Includes correspondence and documents relating to prison reform in New York State, the construction in France and England of warships for the Confederate Navy, the movement of Confederate ships in European waters, Confederate activities in Europe, the establishment at the Académie française of the Botta Prize, and the fitness of John C. Frémont for the Republican presidential candidacy in 1856. John Shaw Billings (1838-1913) was an American surgeon, hospital planner and librarian. He served as a U.S. Army surgeon and was responsible for creating the nation's foremost medical library, now the National Library of Medicine. He served as special advisor to the trustees of Johns Hopkins Hospital in planning and organizing that institution. After retiring from the Army in 1895, Billings was named the first Director of the New York Public Library. He helped create the NYPL by combining the Astor and Lenox Libraries into a public research library and building a branch library system for three of the boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx). He also planned and oversaw the construction of the Central Library building which was opened to the public in 1911. Collection consists of correspondence and papers relating to Billings' work with the United States Army Medical Department, 1861-1895; Johns Hopkins Hospital (especially building plans), 1873-1890; National Board of Health, 1879-1881; the 10th and 11th censuses, University of Pennsylvania Hospital and Laboratory of Hygiene, 1890-1895; The New York Public Library, 1895-1913; Committee of Fifty on the Liquor Problem, 1893-1904; Carnegie Institute, 1902-1913; National Academy of Science, 1875-1911; and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
