Dr. Jean Sindab (1944-1996) was an African American scholar and activist for environmental, social, and racial justice. The Jean Sindab papers date from 1970 to 1995 and contain professional files that document subjects of interest to Sindab; organizations for which she worked; conferences that she organized or attended; and local, grassroots, and governmental initiatives related to environmental and racial justice in the United States, Latin America, and Africa. Edmund W. Gordon (born 1921) is an African-American psychologist and an expert in child development who has worked throughout his career on the issues and challenges of underprivileged and minority students in American education. The Edmund W. Gordon papers, dating from 1957 to 1990, document Gordon's career in government and academia, mostly from the mid-1960s to 1990 at Project Head Start (federal office), Columbia University Teachers College, and Yale University. The papers contain correspondence and subject files holding published and unpublished papers by Gordon and others; drafts and manuscripts of book chapters; files of the Head Start program; lectures and speeches; academic departmental correspondence; government, non-profit, and academic reports; and research-in-progress. less

Sponsored by the United States Office of Education Arts and Humanities Program and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), the Developmental Conference on Dance was a multi-disciplinary, multi-year conference that brought together scholars, teachers, philosophers, and others to explore new frameworks for conceptualizing and teaching dance. Alma Hawkins, founder of the UCLA Dance Department, served as conference chair and project director. Through lectures, group discussion, demonstrations, and working groups, the participants explored the themes of creativity, music, movement, and philosophy as they related to teacher preparation and curriculum design. Selected proceedings of the conference were published in Dance: A Projection for the Future (1968). The collection contains typed transcripts of the conference proceedings, a small amount of correspondence, and the conference schedule. Henry Meigs (1782-1861) was a New York lawyer, assemblyman, and congressman. He was the recording secretary of the American Institute of the City of New York for the Encouragement of Science and Invention. The Informal Proceedings of the American Institute consist of four volumes dating from 1845 to 1860. The proceedings sometimes function as Meigs' personal diary as well as a record of meetings. The volumes contain Meigs' comments on topics such as agriculture, new technology, developments in industrial production, current events in New York City, and American politics; they also contain personal recollections. Among the subjects of Meigs' entries are the exchange of agricultural specimens, outbreaks of cholera and yellow fever, the Crystal Palace at the Exhibition of the Industry of All Nations, the dangers of steam power, and the likelihood of civil war. Each entry contains notes on the weather, at minimum. The volumes have minor annotations. less
