Scope and arrangement
This is a synthetic collection consisting of a typescript, correspondence by and about the author, legal documents, and a portrait photograph. The typescript is a contribution to a collection of tributes to Max Beerbohm. The bulk of the collection consists of letters from the author, dating from 1912 to 1978, to St. John Greer Ervine, Henry James Forman, Clayton Hoagland, Sir Edward Howard Marsh, Reginald Pound, Siegfried Sassoon, Martin Secker, Sylvia Hope Gibsone Secker, and others, as well as letters relating to the author, dating from 1924 to 1940, between various correspondents, including Carl Van Vechten, Hugh Walpole, and the literary agency James B. Pinker and Son. There are letters to Swinnerton from Herbert Mitgang, dating from 1967 to 1975.
