The Harry Salter papers contain mostly scripts for radio programs on which he worked as orchestra conductor or music director.

Biographical/historical information

Conductor and music director Harry Salter was born in Bucharest, Roumania on Sept. 14, 1898 (Some sources list birth year as 1899.) He conducted orchestras for numerous radio and television programs, such as Hollywood Calling, Hobby Lobby, Mr. District Attorney, and Pot o' Gold (which inspired Stop the Music!) and worked with performers such as Milton Berle and Arlene Francis. Salter was also the original producer and conductor for Name That Tune. He created Stop the Music! on radio and television, also serving as music director. Salter was married to Roberta Semple and they had a daughter, Victoria. He died on Mar. 5, 1984 in Mamaroneck, New York.

Scope and arrangement

The collection contains scripts, mostly for radio programs, including an audition by Arlene Francis, possibly for The Affairs of Anne Scotland (ca. 1946), Hollywood Calling (1949), and Pot o' Gold (1946-1947), which inspired the radio and television program Stop the Music!. Also included are financial statements for theater productions ranging from The Best Man in 1964 through Fiddler on the Roof in 1982, a proposal for a television program titled Blessed Event, and an audition script for Congratulations, Pop! (possibly the same program, ca. 1950s) There are also notes regarding Salter's work on the programs and general information.
