Transcripts of interviews conducted by Gerald M. Berkowitz, author and retired theater professor, for his book New Broadways . The collection documents, through these interviews, regional theater in the United States in the latter part of the 20th century.

Biographical/historical information

Gerald M. Berkowitz is an author and a retired professor of theater history at Northern Illinois University. His books include The Plays of David Garrick, The Plays of Sir John Vanbrugh and the Comedy of the Late Seventeenth Century, American Drama of the Twentieth Century, David Garrick: a Reference Guide, New Broadways: Theatre Across America: 1950-1980 and its revised publication, New Broadways: Theatre Across America: Approaching a New Millennium.

Scope and arrangement

The transcripts of the New Broadways interviews are the research materials used by Berkowitz in his book, New Broadways : Theatre Across America: Approaching a New Millennium. The transcripts are interviews with theater professionals who represent a varied cross-section of American theater across the country. Discussions center around Off-Broadway and regional theater. Centers such as Alley Theatre, Goodman Theatre, Lincoln Center Theater, O'Neill Center, Circle Repertory Theatre, Circle in the Square, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Los Angeles Actors Theatre and Playwrights Horizions are discussed. Interviewees include Andre Bishop, Gigi Bolt, Alexander H. Cohen, Bernard Gersten, Ted Mann, Gregory Mosher, Ben Sprecher and George White among others.
