Roland T. (Roland Taylor) Ely (1924-2014) was an American historian, known for his work on New York City merchant and banker Moses Taylor (1806-1882) and sugar production in 19th-century Cuba. The Roland T. Ely papers, 1951-1961, contain his slide presentation "Moses Taylor and the Cuban Trade, 1832-1882," describing his use of The New York Public Library's Moses Taylor Papers and his research in Cuba while a doctoral student. Also included are some of Ely's research computations on Moses Taylor's business finances; typescripts of his academic writings on contemporary United States-Latin American relations; documents relating to a film project promoting inter-American relations by Student-to-Student, Inc. with the Princeton Film Center; copies of awards received from the governments of Argentina and Ecuador; and copied news clippings relating to Ely's professional activities and his research in Cuba, with some loose printed matter. Members of the Bryant family were descended from Peter Bryant (1767-1820) and Sarah Snell Bryant (1766-1847) of Cummington, Mass., and included the poet William Cullen Bryant (1794-1878) and his brothers, who settled in or around Princeton, Ill. His father, Bernard Katz (1901-1970), an artist and designer who worked in advertising, was an independent historian of African-American history and jazz music. Jonathan Katz's mother, Phyllis Brownstone Katz, was a magazine editor and co-founder of the Jane Street Community Garden. The Jonathan Ned Katz papers reflect his life and career as an historian, author, LGBTQ rights advocate, teacher, and textile designer. They most heavily document Katz's research and writings on LGBTQ history and activism, and encompass his personal life, family, friends, and the LGBTQ liberation movement. Herbert George Gutman (1928-1985) was a historian and professor of history at Fairleigh Dickinson University and various New York universities. His published works concerned the social and economic structure of American labor. Bulk of the collection consists of Gutman's correspondence and writings. Included are his papers as a student and as a university professor, personal miscellany, research notes, and printed matter. His correspondence with historians, professors of history, academic colleagues, graduate students, and others relates mainly to matters of historical method, to the historiography of the black family and of the working class in America, and to Gutman's and his colleagues' research and writings. The International League for Human Rights was founded in New York City in 1942 as the International League for the Rights of Man, a non-governmental agency to promote human rights worldwide. The League takes as its platform the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the United Nations in 1948. The League sponsors studies and programs on human rights, conducts direct interventions with governments concerning rights violations, lodges protests with international agencies, conducts investigative missions, sends observers to political trials, and aids individual victims of human rights violations. The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, minutes, reports, financial papers, case files and printed matter such as clippings, press releases, brochures, and newsletters. This material documents League efforts to investigate human rights abuses around the world, to assist individual victims, and to participate in conferences sponsored by the United Nations and other international organizations. Correspondence files include letters of League founder and chairman Roger Baldwin to and from League members and other individuals and organizations. Also included are internal memoranda, press releases, reports and ephemera relating to the investigation of rights violations in various countries. James Leander Cathcart (1767-1843) was a seaman, American consul to the Barbary States, and civil servant. He served as a sailor during the American Revolution, was captured first by the British, then by Algerian pirates in 1785 and was sold into slavery in Algeria. After his release from eleven years in captivity, he returned to the Barbary States as consul from the U.S. After his diplomatic service he worked as a clerk in the U.S. Treasury. His oldest son, Charles W. Cathcart (1800-1888) settled in Indiana in 1830 and became a farmer, land speculator and politically active Democrat. He served two terms in the House of Representatives and was appointed to the U.S. Senate. Collection consists of correspondence of James Leander Cathcart and other family members, genealogical notes and printed matter. Correspondence includes Cathcart's letters while a prisoner of and later emissary to the Barbary States, 1785-1806, and letters to his sons after their moves to the Michigan and Indiana Territories, 1827-1844. Iantha Schultz Cantine (1864-1951) extensively researched the genealogy of the Eastgate family. Shortly before her death, she wrote a book entitled The Descendants of John Eastgate, 1791-1837 in the United States, using information which she gathered from family members, historic family documents, and her own recollection. Intending to accompany her aunt's book with further historical documentation, in 1958 Katherine E. Schultz arranged dozens of mostly 19th century family letters into a collection. She also created a volume of corresponding transcriptions and family photographs. This is the material that comprises the Eastgate Family Papers. less

Herbert Mitgang (1920- ), author, editor, journalist, and motion-picture producer, was managing editor of the U.S. Army newspaper Stars and Stripes, during World War II. After his war service, he joined the New York Times as a copy editor and reviewer. He served as supervising editor of the Sunday Times drama section from 1955 to 1962, editorial writer and member of the editorial board from 1963 to 1964 and again from 1967 to 1976. From 1964 to 1967 he was assistant to the president and the executive editor of CBS News and produced several documentary films. He taught at City College in New York, was a visiting lecturer at Yale University and served as president of both the Authors' League and the Authors' Guild. Since 1976 Mitgang has been a cultural correspondent and book reviewer for the New York Times. In addition to his work at the Times and CBS, he has written articles, novels and biographies and has edited several books. Collection consists of correspondence, writings, files relating to publications, notes, clippings, photographs, motion pictures, recordings, videotapes, and memorabilia that document Mitgang's activities as a journalist, author, editor, and film producer. Manuscript records and readers' reports, 1930-1947, include brief plot summaries and readers' opinions. Manuscript rejection correspondence, 1939-1943, contains letters from authors submitting manuscripts, and standard rejection letters from Knopf's editorial staff. Children's Department records, 1952-1961, of rejected manuscripts include short summaries and evaluations. Files of press clippings, 1930s to 1950s, of reviews of Knopf books also contain some sample book jackets and press releases. Captain Percival Drayton (1812-1865) of Charleston, South Carolina and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was a distinguished U.S. Navy officer who served in the Union Navy during the Civil War. The Percival Drayton family papers, 1827-1967, chiefly document Percival Drayton's naval career, particularly during the Civil War. Drayton's papers, 1827-1865, comprise correspondence, naval orders and reports, a diary, financial papers, and certificates. The remainder, 1845-1967, consists of papers created or received by other Drayton family members and relatives, as well as ephemera, photographs, and printed material, mostly pertaining to Percival Drayton. Also included are letters written by an unidentified relative, a naval notebook, and later family correspondence regarding Drayton's naval service, as well as two manifest books for shipments of tobacco in the Maryland-District of Columbia area, 1803-1817, their connection to the Drayton family being unclear. less

Leitsch, who served as president of the Mattachine Society of New York from 1965 through 1971, is best known for organizing Mattachine's "Sip-in" protest of 1966. Straus, Jr. After numerous changes in management and corresponding changes in name, the company became known as Farrar, Straus & Giroux, Inc. (FSG) in 1964 when Robert Giroux became editor-in-chief. The company firmly established itself as a quality publisher in the 1960s and 1970s. FSG remained staunchly independent of conglomerate publishing for many years.
