He and his first wife, Helen Kendrick Johnson (1844-1914), were ardent anti-feminists who belonged to various organizations opposed to women's suffrage. Helen Johnson was also an author and editor. David McNeely Stauffer (1845-1913) was an American civil engineer, editor, artist, and collector. He worked for several railroads including the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad until 1876 when he went into private practice. He wrote scholarly articles and edited the Engineering News. In addition to collecting autographs and illustrations, he designed book plates and did pen and ink drawings. Collection consists of Stauffer's personal papers and his autograph and seal collection.
