Scope and arrangement
The Preston Wilcox photographs date approximately from the 1960s to 2003, and chronicle Wilcox's personal life and the work of AFRAM Associates in Harlem. Loose prints, negatives, contact sheets, and slides are arranged by topic into Personal and AFRAM Associates files.
Personal photographs date from 1964 to 2001, and include prints, slides, and negatives. Images portray Wilcox, friends, and family at private events such as social gatherings, graduation ceremonies, cookouts, and holiday celebrations. There are also some photographs from Wilcox's travels to Africa and Asia.
Loose prints, slides, and contact sheets illustrate AFRAM Associates' dual work as a public service agency and community archive documenting Black society and culture. These images are dated from approximately the late 1960s to 2003, and are arranged topically into local and national conferences; day-to-day life in Harlem; examples of community-controlled schools; and images of notable Black individuals. Individuals present in the collection include Mae C. Jemison; Clara (Mother) Hale; Martin Luther King, Jr.; Malcolm X; and James Baldwin.
