Scope and arrangement
The Geraldine Daniels District Office photographs, dating from 1964 to 1997, consist of prints, contact sheets, and negatives that depict mostly her legislative work as an Assemblywoman. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by topic.
Most of the photographs span the 1980s and contain prints of Assemblywoman Daniels at various work events and meetings while she served in the New York State Assembly. The prints show Daniels speaking at a podium, meeting with constituents, talking with or standing next to other politicians, or sitting at a luncheon. Most prints in this category are labeled topically as "legislative activities." Inscriptions on the back of the prints indicate that some of these photographs were sent to constituents and used in an office collage. Some of these prints have inscriptions on the back identifying individuals and event information, however, most do not. Identified events and meetings include a meeting of the Subcommittee on Preventative Health Care; a community breakfast at New York Public Library's Harlem Branch; Senior Citizen's Day in Albany, New York; a Communicators Workers of America lunch in Albany, New York; Former Governor Hugh Carey's visit to the Schomburg; and the rededication of the Harlem State Office Building to the Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. State Office Building.
In addition to legislative activities, the photographs include candid and formal portraits of Daniels during her years in the State Assembly, prints of Daniels before her election to the State Assembly, and personal prints of Daniels' 1985 and 1987 birthday parties. The portraits often portray Daniels with politicians and celebrities, including Harry Belafonte, Hugh Carey, Bill Cosby, Mario Cuomo, Gordon Davis, David Dinkins, Geraldine Ferraro, Evangeline Gouletas, Jay Hershenson, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. William James, Dexter King, Yvonne Leftwich, Gerald W. Lynch, James A. Malone, Carl McCall, Walter Mondale, Basil Paterson, David Paterson, Fred Samuel, Dr. Betty Shabazz, and Charles Rangel. Also, present is one folder of miscellaneous drawings and portraits of celebrities and politicians.
