Scope and arrangement
The Ernestine McClendon photographs date from 1936 to 1986 and are arranged by topic into: Productions, McClendon Enterprises, and Personal.
Productions showcase McClendon's time as an actress via production photographs, contact sheets, headshots, resumes, and programs. Materials have been arranged alphabetically by title or photographer, if known, and document her work in both New York City and Los Angeles. Unidentified productions are held at the end. Of particular note are photographs of McClendon debuting as a stand-up comedian in 1984, including a photograph of her name headlining a Los Angeles theatre marquee.
The photographs, clippings, and contact sheets in McClendon Enterprises depict McClendon at work in her New York offices, and are arranged by subject. Photographs of a 1962 party celebrating the opening of the New York office and McClendon attending performances with her clients are present. Also of note are contact sheets for a 1969 multi-page spread in Ebony Magazine about McClendon's work as a talent agent.
Personal photographs are arranged by subject and contain photographs, clippings of social events, friends and family, and parties. Headshots, performance photographs, and candid photographs of George Wiltshire are held here, frequently with his longtime comedic partner, Dewey "Pigmeat" Markham. Wiltshire was an avid collector of signed headshots of actors, comedians, and musicians, and these are also held here.
This collection contains photographs of Black performers in blackface and in minstrel shows. These are held together in a single folder at the end of the Personal photographs. Many are inscribed to George Wiltshire.
