Scope and arrangement
The St. James Guide to Black Artists collection consists of materials that were sent by the artists as resource material for their entries. There are files for 114 of the 400 artists in the book. Included are painters, sculptors, mixed-media artists, ceramicists, photographers, and printmakers. Artists from across the Diaspora are represented including Mestre Didi (Brazil), Iba N'Diaye (Senegal), Howardena Pindell (US), Edgar Brierre (Haiti), Valentim Rubem (Brazil), Sonia Boyce (Britain), Julien Hudson (US), Jules Lion (France), Petrona Morrison (Jamaica), and Valente Malangatana Ngwenya (Mozambique). The collection contains a variety of materials including biographical sketches, resumes, business cards, photographs, reproductions, newspaper and magazine articles, and exhibition programs.
