Scope and arrangement
The Archambeau and St. Hill family collection consists of papers pertaining to family members before and after they immigrated to the United States from Jamaica and Barbados. Documents for the Archambeau family include copies of the marriage certificates for John and Elizabeth Jane Archambeau, John Nicholas Archambeau's parents, who were married in Jamaica in 1869; and Emile Archambeau, a member of the family who owned members of John Archambeau's family during slavery. Other documents for the Archambeau family include several copies of nineteenth-century baptismal certificates; Elizabeth Jane Archambeau's passport and immigration documents for her grandchildren, Lester and Sybil; and deeds and other legal documents regarding the foreclosure of the family house in Hackensack, New Jersey (1932-1933).
There is also a commencement program for Sybil Archambeau's graduation from the Teacher's Training School in Jersey City, New Jersey (1927); a list of officers and members of the Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, a professional association for educators (1947), of which she was a member; and the commencement program for Lester Archambeau's children, Rita Louise and Jason R. Archambeau, both from Howard University in 1961.
The St. Hill family documents include a baptismal certificate for Clyde Ewart St. Hill, Jr., (Barbados, 1910); the invitation and program for the Howard University commencement at which he received his M.D. degree (1939); and his marriage certificate from the same year.
Clippings and photocopies of photographs represent both families, as does a family history prepared by Cynthia St. Hill (2003).
