The J.A. Rogers "Your History" column collection consists of approximately 120 weekly columns he wrote for the Pittsburgh Courier. The column included both thematic subjects and biographical sketches of Blacks worldwide from ancient to contemporary times. The illustrations, which formed an integral part of the column, were done by A. Samuel Milai. The collection dates are 1958-1961, however, not all of the columns are included in this collection.
Biographical/historical information
J. A. Rogers, born Joel Augustus Rogers in Jamaica, was a journalist and author of fiction and non-fiction works. He immigrated to the United States in 1906. A self-educated man, Rogers authored numerous books and articles on race subjects. Among his non-fiction works are World's Greatest Men and Women of African Descent (1935), 100 Amazing Facts about the Negro (1934), The Real Facts about Ethiopia (1936), and World's Great Men of Color (1947). He is probably best known for Sex and Race (1941) and The Five Negro Presidents (1965). In addition, he wrote columns, including "Impressions of Europe" and "Jazz at Home", for several black newspapers and for the Pittsburgh Courier, an illustrated feature entitled "Your History." He also wrote two novels From "Superman" to Man and She Walks in Beauty.
The columns were apparently gathered and pasted onto 8.5 x 14 sheets by George Westerman, editor of the Panama Tribune.
