John R. Strachen was born in Harlem. He attended De Witt Clinton High School and received a degree from New York University. He spent four years in the armed forces, followed by two years in the New York City public school system. He became a postal clerk in 1941; he was promoted to a supervisory position in 1959, where he helped implement the zip code system in New York City. After a stint as the Acting Postmaster of New York in 1966 and confirmation by the U.S. Senate, he became the Postmaster of New York in 1967. The John R. Strachen papers consist of materials related to his role as Postmaster of New York. Included are letters and telegrams of congratulations upon his appointment as Acting Postmaster of New York City, 1966, and his nomination and appointment to Postmaster in 1967. Also included are certificates news clippings, invitations, news releases, and programs.
