Bruce Morrow (1963-) is a writer and the co-editor (with Charles Rowell) of Shade: An Anthology of Fiction by Gay Men of African Descent, published in 1996 by Avon Books. The Bruce Morrow Shade Anthology collection contains material documenting the publishing history of Shade, along with some personal papers, including writings, of Bruce Morrow himself.

Biographical/historical information

Bruce Morrow (1963-)is a writer and the co-editor (with Charles Rowell) of Shade: An Anthology of Fiction by Gay Men of African Descent, published in 1996 by Avon Books.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Morrow was educated at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and Columbia University, receiving an MFA in 1991. He served on the editorial board of Callaloo: A Journal of African-American and African Diaspora Arts and Letters from 1991 to 2000 and was the associate director of the nonprofit Teachers & Writers Collaborative in New York City for eleven years.

In addition to Shade, his writings have appeared in numerous anthologies, including Ancestral House: The Black Short Story in the Americas and Europe (1995) Go the Way the Blood Beats: An Anthology of Lesbian and Gay Fiction by African-American Writers (1996) Fighting Words: Personal Essays by Black Gay Men (1999), Men on Men 2000: Best New Gay Fiction for the Millennium (2000), Mama's Boy: Gay Men Writing about their Mothers (2000), Step Into A World: A Global Anthology of the New Black Literature (2000), Black Silk: A Collection of African American Erotica (2002), Imagining America: Stories from the Promised Land: A Multicultural Anthology of American Fiction (2003), Freedom in This Village: Twenty-Five Years of Black Gay Men's Writing (2004), and Voices Rising: Celebrating 20 Years of Black Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Writing (2007).

He is the recipient of the Frederick Douglass Fellowship for Young African-American Writers (1995) and the Charles H. Revson Foundation Fellowship for Mid-Career Civic Leaders at Columbia University (2007).

Scope and arrangement

The Bruce Morrow Shade Anthology collection contains material documenting the publishing history of Shade: An Anthology of Fiction by Gay Men of African Descent, edited by Bruce Morrow and Charles H. Rowell, along with some personal papers, including writings, of Bruce Morrow himself. Beginning with the initial proposal for the book (originally to be titled "Signing Myself"), the collection includes correspondence leading up to the actual publication of the book by Avon in 1996. The bulk of the archive consists of files of the twenty-two contributors, as well as other writings submitted but not included in the final volume. Supplementary files concern submissions of artwork for the cover, press materials, and reviews.

The collection also contains personal papers of Bruce Morrow, including writings, correspondence, editorial files from his work at Callaloo, and materials from various conferences he attended. There are also some writings by others, including a typescript of a novel by Steven Corbin, "A Street Called Paradise", another for Push by Sapphire, and a press packet on the film I Can't Sleep directed by Claire Denis.
