Howard Bennett (1911-1981) was a civil rights activist and a Harlem community leader who founded the National Citizens Committee for a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The collection consists of one audio recording of a birthday tribute to King in 1972.
Howard Bennett (1911-1981) was a civil rights activist and a Harlem community leader who founded the National Citizens Committee for a Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. From the time of King's assassination on April 4, 1968, Bennett campaigned persistently to have King's birthday celebrated as a national holiday. In 1983, January 15th became Martin Luther King Day with a bill signed by President Ronald Reagan. Since 1986, the national holiday has been observed on the third Monday in January.
