Sample Noel Pittman (1925-2004) collected artifacts related to Black history, enslavement, and race relations in the United States, and was a professor and administrator at Borough of Manhattan Community College. The collection contains three videos related to Pittman's collecting activities.
Sample Noel Pittman (1925-2004) collected artifacts related to Black history, enslavement, and race relations in the United States, including shackles, branding irons, prints, paintings, figurines, and documents. His research focus was the history and imagery of Black Americans, especially in the antebellum South, as well as on coins, paper currency, and medals. Pittman developed his collection with the goal of creating a national slavery museum in New York City.
Pittman earned a PhD in educational sociology in 1973. In the 1970s, he was an associate professor and associate dean of administration at the Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) of the City University of New York. Pittman died in 2004.
